Gypsies in subject words of dictionaries and encyclopedias

Abstract:

Naše práce se zabývá heslem Cikáni v českých encyklopediích. Zaměřujeme se na rozvoj tohoto hesla od prvních českých encyklopedií až do těch současnosných. V našem výzkumu jsme si položili dvě základní otázky. Za prvé, jak jsou Cikáni definováni v encyklopediích a jaké jsou jejich hlavní charakteristiky. Za druhé, můžeme najít v definicích Cikánů spojení s Grellmannem? Podle našich teorii, je toto spojení více než jasné. Jako výzkumnou metodu jsme zvolili obsahovou analýzu. V této metodě, jsme spojili kvalitativní a kvantitativní analýzu. Analyzovali jsme 20 českých encyklopedií. Závěrem, můžeme říci, že náš výzkum přinesl velmi zajímavé výsledky. Dokázali jsme spojitost s Grellmannem, která trvá dodnes. Jako hlavní charakteristiky Cikánů jsou uváděny: jejich indický původ, sdílená historie, společný jazyk a kočovnictví. Kromě toho se defininují jednou kulturou, která zahrnuje tradiční profese a přirozený talent pro hudbu a tanec. Všechny tyto charakteristiky lze nalézt i u Grellmanna, což potvrzuje naši teorii.

Abstract:

Our thesis deals with the subject word Gypsies in the Czech encyclopedias. We focus on the development of this subject word from the first Czech encyclopedias until the present day. In our research we asked ourselves two basic questions. Firstly, as the Gypsies are defined in encyclopedias and what are the main characteristics attributed to them. Second, can we find in the definitions of the Gypsies a link with Grellmann? According to our theory that link is more than clear. As a research method we have chosen textual analysis. In this method, we combined qualitative and quantitative analysis. We analyzed 20 Czech encyclopedias. Finally, we can say that our research has brought very interesting results. We have shown an association with Grellmann, which lasts until today. This is attributed to the main characteristics of the Gypsies, who are still the same. As the main characteristics of the Gypsies is mentioned their Indian origin, shared history, common language and nomadism. Furthermore, the definition of one culture, which includes the traditional professions and natural talent for music and dance. All these characteristics can be found even Grellmann, which confirms our theory.
