Superstition and superstitious practices related to conception, pregnancy and the puerperium in historical reflection and the present

Abstract:

Pověrečné praktiky související s početím, těhotenstvím a šestinedělím jsou nejen součástí života ženy, ale také částí kulturní paměti. Předkládaná disertační práce se zabývá těmito pověrami jak z historického, tak současného hlediska. V historické dimenzi se práce věnuje období starověkého Sumeru, egyptským lékařským papyrům, řeckým učencům a jejich teoriím o vzniku a funkci lidského těla nebo římskému rozlišování lékařů a šarlatánů. Středověká reflexe vybraných pověr zahrnuje díla dobových lékařů; v novověku pak dochází k postupné racionalizaci pověrečných praktik a jejich vymizení z dobových pramenů. V dalších částech se disertační práce věnuje samotnému pojmu pověra, zamýšlí se nad jeho vznikem, dobovými významy a proměnami v dějinách. Terénní výzkum zaměřený na vybrané pověry obohatil práci o výpovědi současných respondentů, jež byly komparovány s etnologickou a historickou literaturou. Součástí práce je tematická sonda z terénního výzkumu na Bali a Srí Lance.

Abstract:

Superstitious practices related to conception, pregnancy and childbearing are not only part of a woman's life, but also part of cultural memory. The present dissertation examines these superstitions from both historical and contemporary perspectives. In the historical dimension, the work focuses on the period of ancient Sumer, the Egyptian medical papyri, Greek scholars and their theories about the origin and function of the human body, or the Roman distinction between physicians and charlatans. Medieval reflection on selected superstitions includes the works of contemporary physicians; in the modern period, there is a gradual rationalisation of superstitious practices and their disappearance from contemporary sources. In the following sections, the dissertation examines the concept of superstition itself, reflecting on its origins, contemporary meanings, and changes throughout history. Field research on selected superstitions enriched the thesis with testimonies of contemporary respondents, which were compared with ethnological and historical literature. The thesis includes a thematic probe from field research in Bali and Sri Lanka.
