Sensory Processing in Individuals with Williams Syndrom

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaměřuje na senzorické zpracování u jedinců s Williamsovým syndromem z pohledu rodičů a pedagogů. Teoretická část je členěna do tří kapitol. První kapitola se věnuje popisu Williamsova syndromu, jeho charakteristickým znakům, medicínským obtížím a genetickým příčinám. Dále se věnuje motorickému vývoji a psychologickým aspektům jako je například paměť, inteligence nebo řeč. Druhá kapitola je věnována vzdělávání jedinců se speciálními vzdělávacími potřebami v inkluzivním i speciálním školství, deskripci podpůrných opatření a charakteristice vzdělávání žáků s Williamsovým syndromem. Poslední teoretická kapitola se věnuje senzorickému zpracování, dysfunkcím v senzorickém systému, repetitivnímu chování a úzkostem. Empirická část obsahuje vlastní výzkumné šetření. Nejprve popisuje metodologii výzkumu a jeho další aspekty, následně zpracovaná data popisuje a formou diskuse interpretuje. Šetření bylo realizováno pomocí čtyř dotazníků zaměřujících se na podmínky vzdělávání, senzorické zpracování, repetitivní chování a úzkost u jedinců s Williamsovým syndromem. Data byla zpracována deskriptivně pomocí tematické analýzy, obsahové a komparativní analýzy a formou analytické indukce byly vypracovány závěry výzkumu. Výzkum přináší následující výsledky: děti s Williamsovým syndromem mají obtíže v oblasti senzorické modulace, především v oblasti auditivní, gustatorní, vestibulární a taktilní. S obavami z neočekávaných zvuků nebo nejistoty budoucích události pramení úzkostné chování, které se projevuje motorickým neklidem a repetitivními otázkami. Senzorické obtíže, úzkost i repetitivní chování se objevují v domácím i prostředí, kdy obtíže v senzorickém zpracování mírně převažují v domácím prostředí. S výše zmíněnými aspekty pracují pedagogové v inkluzivním i speciálním školství a nabízí dětem podporu v případě vyskytujících se obtíží. Zároveň dbají na pozitivní klima ve třídách, kde se vzdělávají jedinci s Williamsovým syndromem a využívají široké spektrum podpůrných opatření pro jejich rozvoj a vzdělávání.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis focuses on sensory processing in individuals with Williams syndrome from the perspective of parents and educators. The theoretical part is divided into three chapters. The first chapter describes Williams syndrome, its characteristic features, medical difficulties, and genetic causes. It also deals with the motor development and psychological aspects such as memory, intelligence, and speech. The second chapter is devoted to the education of individuals with special educational needs in both inclusive and special education, a description of support measures and the characteristics of the education of pupils with Williams syndrome. The last theoretical chapter is devoted to sensory processing, dysfunctions in the sensory system, repetitive behaviour, and anxiety. The empirical part contains its own research investigation. First, it describes the research methodology and its other aspects, then it represents the processed data and interprets it in the form of a discussion. The investigation was carried out using four questionnaires focusing on educational conditions, sensory processing, repetitive behaviour, and anxiety in individuals with Williams syndrome. The data were processed descriptively using thematic analysis, content and comparative analysis, and the research conclusions were drawn using analytical induction. The research brings the following results: children with Williams syndrome have difficulties in sensory modulation, especially in the auditory, gustatory, vestibular, and tactile areas. With the fear of unexpected sounds or the uncertainty of future events, anxious behaviour arises, manifested by motor restlessness and repetitive questions. Sensory difficulties, anxiety and repetitive behaviour appear in both – home and school environments when problems in sensory processing are slightly more prevalent in the home environment. Educators in inclusive and special education work with the aspects mentioned earlier and offer children support in case of difficulties. At the same time, they ensure a positive climate in the classrooms where individuals with Williams syndrome are educated and use a wide range of support measures for their development and education.
