Optical Illusions in Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher's Creations

Abstract:

Práce je věnována problematice optických klamů a iluzí ve výtvarném umění, se zvláštním zaměřením na tvorbu Salvadora Dalího a M. C. Eschera. Svými optickými pokusy dokázali Dalí a Escher podnítit schopnost diváka pohlédnout za hranice všedního světa. Aby přiměl smysly k novému vnímání světa, obohatil Dalí svou uměleckou techniku o anamorfickou perspektivu a dvojitou i mnohoznačnou figuraci. Dalí rovněž popsal paranoicko-kritickou metodu, aktivní formu interpretace obrazů, objektů nebo událostí v souvislosti s osobní a iracionální posedlostí. Z matematických zákonů vycházející grafická díla M. C. Eschera, jež zobrazují nemožné konstrukce, zkoumání nekonečna a mozaikové struktury, usilují o vytvoření maximální „optické nejistoty“. Oba umělci se zabývali prozkoumáváním „skryté reality“, naznačující analogie s nepoznatelností podvědomí. Tato studie se snaží postihnout základní principy vnímání optických fenoménů.

Abstract:

My dissertation is devoted to optical illusions in fine art, especially in Salvador Dalí and M. C. Eschers creation. With their optical experiments, Dalí and Escher succeed in stimulating the viewers ability to scrutinize the visual world. To direct the senses towards a new vision of the world, Dalí supplemented his artistic technique with anamorphic perspective and with the double and multiple figuration. So-called double image is an image that without altering any of its elements can at the same time represent a second, wholly distinct subject. Dalí also described the paranoiac-critical method, an active form of interpreting images, objects or events in the world according to a personal and irrational obsession. Often mathematically inspired M. C. Eschers graphic works, which feature impossible constructions, explorations of infinity, and tessellations, aim to produce the maximal optical insecurity. Both artists posited a hidden reality which was to suggest analogies with the unknowable of the unconscious. This study tries to sum up basic principles in perception of optical illusions.
