Deposition and characterisation of nanolaminates

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na přípravu a charakterizaci tenkých vrstev obsahujících wolfram, bor a uhlík. Podle kvantově-mechanických výpočtů by vrstva o chemickém složení W2BC měla tvořit nanolaminátní krystalickou fázi vykazující zároveň vysokou tvrdost a dostatečnou lomovou houževnatost. Cílem práce je studium vlastností tenkých WBC vrstev v závislosti na jejich chemickém složení. Vrstvy jsou připraveny nereaktivním stejnosměrným odprašováním válcového segmentového terče v magnetronové konfiguraci. Terč se skládá ze segmentů wolframu, grafitu a keramiky B4C. Chemické složení vrstev je charakterizováno pomocí energiově disperzní spektrometrie, mechanické vlastnosti indentačními technikami a mikrostruktura rentgenovou difrakcí. Nejvyšší podíl krystalické fáze dosáhly vrstvy s chemickým složením blízkým stechiometrie W2BC, nejvyšší hodnoty tvrdosti a modulu pružnosti však dosahovaly amorfní vrstvy s nižším podílem wolframu. Přítomnost krystalické fáze tak pravděpodobně není podmínkou dobrých mechanických vlastností WBC tenkých vrstev.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on synthesis and characterisation of ternary thin films composed of tungsten, boron and carbon. According to ab initio calculations the W2BC thin films should exhibit simultaneously high hardness and moderate ductility. The goal of the thesis is to study the evolution of thin films properties with the chemical composition of WBC film. Thin films are synthesised by non-reactive magnetron sputtering using cylindrical rotary target. Target is composed of individual segments of boron carbide, tungsten and graphite. Chemical composition is determined by the energy dispersive spectrometry, mechanical properties are studied by the indentation techniques, and the microstructure is described by X-ray diffraction. Despite that the highest crystallinity was reached for the coating composition close to W2BC stoichiometry, the amorphous thin films with smaller tungsten content exhibited better mechanical properties. The presence of the crystalline structure is thus not essential for good mechanical properties of WBC thin films.
