Language of game culture - sociolectal study and discourse analysis of linguistic features on Twitch.tv

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je přiblížit jazyková specifika užívaná komunitou uživatelů platformy Twitch.tv a představit tuto subkulturu a její unikátní způsob komunikace širší veřejnosti. Twitch.tv je jedna z nejvíce rozšířených streamovacích platforem, jedná se ve zkratce o server poskytující přístup k živě vysílaným video přenosům, obvykle s videoherním obsahem, který může být sledován až desítkami tisíc diváků najednou. Každý stream prezentuje svou vlastní jedinečnou kombinaci online konverzace a videoherního komentáře. Twitch.tv nezprostředkovává svým divákům pouze možnost sledovat stovky streamerů v živém přenosu, ale také možnost se aktivně zapojit do komunikace s ostatními uživateli a samotným streamerem v reálném čase. Jinými slovy představuje počítačem zprostředkovanou komunikaci mezi vysílajícím a jeho publikem. Tato interakce vytváří velmi silný pocit sounáležitosti a emoční vazbu mezi jejími účastníky a zároveň dává prostor pro vznik specifické diskurzní skupiny a slangu. Tato bakalářská práce se dále zabývá studiem rozhraní této platformy a způsoby přenosu informací mezi sledujícím a streamerem pomocí jak mluveného slova, tak prostřednicím Twitch chatu. Některými z mnoha specifikací jsou například členství a předplatitelské bonusy daného kanálu, které udávájí hierarchii mezi jednotlivými uživateli, vzorce chování v dané skupině, způsob, kterým je sdílena informace, její záměr a účel, místo a čas a také způsob jakým je přijata a její důsledky v komunikaci. Jedna sekce této práce je výhradně věnována jazykovým vlastnostem vyskytujícím se pouze v rámci Twitch chatu, jako je používání emotů - jejich kontext a význam, šíření copypasty, donate alerty a oznámení, uživatelské odznaky a achievmenty, způsoby monitorování a moderace diskuze a příklady typické slovní zásoby. Součástí této práce je též kvalitativní výzkum zkoumající herní subkulturu a společné vlastnosti určující diváckou základnu některých vybraných nejvíce sledovaných Twitch streamerů.

Abstract:

The main concern of this thesis is to introduce the specifics of the language used by the community of Twitch.tv and present this subculture and its unique form of communication to the wider public. Twitch.tv is one of the most popular streaming platforms; it is essentially a live broadcasting video service of usually gaming content which could be watched by thousands of people at a time. It is a mixture of online conversation and gameplay commentary. Twitch.tv does not only provide its users with the ability to watch hundreds of streamers online, but also the ability to chat with and interact with the other users, and the streamer in real-time. In other words, it features computer-mediated communication between the streamer and his audience. This interaction creates a very strong sense of common identity and fellowship and also provides its own discourse community and jargon. This Bachelor thesis studies the Twitch's interface and how information is being transferred among viewers and the streamer through both spoken interaction and Twitch chat. Some of the most significant components being the community membership and hierarchy, behaviour patterns of the group, ways of producing a message and its mode, the intent and purpose, place and time, and also reception and outcome. One section is dedicated to the specific features occurring exclusively in Twitch chat, like the use of emotes - their context and meaning, copy-pastas, donation alerts, user badges, ways of monitoring and moderation and typical vocabulary. The final section of this work also provides the findings of a qualitative survey examining the gaming subculture and common features shared among the audience of some of the most followed Twitch streamers.
