Significant figure of Czech Feature Film - Joint film performances of Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich and their individual postwar production in the light of mutal correspondence.

Abstract:

První část práce se věnuje společným filmům Voskovce a Wericha, které natočili v letech 1931 ? 1937. Jsou to filmy: Pudr a benzín, Peníze nebo život, Hej ? rup! a Svět patří nám. Druhou a rozsáhlejší částí práce je popis jejich života, práce a spolupráce ve světle vzájemné korespondence, která byla vydaná ve třech svazcích. Originály této korespondence jsou uloženy v Gotliebově archivu v Bostnu a jsou společným titulem nakladatelství Akropilis a Nadace Jana a Medy Mládkových. První svazek obsahuje dopisy z let 1945 ? 1962, druhý svazek korespondence je z let 1963 ? 1968 a poslední svazek z let 1969 ? 1980. V jejich dopisech se odrážejí nejen soukromé radosti a starosti, ale také obsahují úvahy o životě a smrti, názory na tehdejší svět nebo na politické dění. Ačkoliv Voskovec a Werich přímo mistrně ovládali český jazyk, jejich dopisy nejsou vždycky psány standardní spisovnou češtinou a velice často si s jazykem hrají. Dlouhou řadu let byla vzájemná korespondence Jiřího Voskovce a Jana Wericha jediným pokračováním jejich předválečné literární spolupráce. Po únoru 1948 se jejich cesty rozdělili a od té doby se toužili opět setkat a stát spolu na jednom jevišti nebo si zahrát ve společném filmu. To se jim nikdy nepodařilo. Několikrát se sice sešli, ale roku 1974 se naposledy viděli ve Vídni. Jan Werich 31. října 1980 umírá a tím jejich dlouholetá korespondence končí.

Abstract:

The first part of my presentation is devoted to films which Voskovec and Werich made together in years 1931? 1937. These are following films: Powder and petrol, Money or life, Hej-rup! and The world belongs us. The second part of my presentation is wider and it describes their lives, work and cooperation in highlight of mutual correspondence which was published in three volumes. The originals of this correspondence are deposited in Gotlieb archives in Boston and they are the titles of Publisher Akropolis and Foundation of Jan and Meda Mládkovi. The first volume contains the letters from 1945?1962 years, the second volume of correspondence is from 1963?1968 years and the last volume is from 1969?1980 years. There are not only private happiness and worries in their letters, but the letters also contain the thoughts about life and death, opinions in the world or in political events. Although Voskovec and Werich mastered the Czech language in an excellent way, their letters are not always written in standard literary Czech language and they fiddle with language very often. For many years the correspondence of Jiři Voskovec and Jan Werich was only one continue of their pre war literary cooperation. After February 1948 their ways divided and since this time they desired for meeting again, standing together on one stage or playing together in a film. This wish was never fulfilled.They met a few times, but in 1974 they met in Wien for the last time. Jan Werich died on 31st October 1980 and their longlasting correspondence ended up.
