Vědecké metody v religionistice a jejich aplikace v bádání o raném křesťanství

Abstract:

Disertační práce si klade za úkol prozkoumat, jakým způsobem může vypadat vědecký přístup ke studiu náboženství (na teoretické úrovni) a zda lze využívat nových technologií k počítačové analýze dochovaných pramenů (na úrovni metody). Cílem je reflexe relevantnosti a použitelnosti těchto nových teoretických a metodologických přístupů na základě jejich aplikace na konkrétní fenomén z oblasti bádání o raném křesťanství. Práce se proto pohybuje na dvou rovinách. První, teoretickou rovinu tvoří otázka po možnosti, povaze a podobě vědeckého přístupu ke studiu náboženství. Druhou, aplikovanou rovinou je snaha o využití vědeckého přístupu při zkoumání konkrétního fenoménu z oblasti raného křesťanství, aby tak bylo přímo poukázáno na přínosy a limity těchto teorií a metod. Ve hře je tedy jak otázka z oblasti teorie a filosofie vědy - zda je možné vědecky zkoumat náboženství a jakou podobu může takový přístup mít - tak otázka z oblasti religionistiky - zda tyto teorie a metody mohou přispět k výzkumu vzniku křesťanské víry. Sledovaným diskurzem je kognitivní věda o náboženství, ze které je vybrána Boyerova teorie minimální kontraintuitivity náboženských reprezentací, doplněná a zpřesněná Barrettem. Konkrétním fenoménem z dějin bádání o raném křesťanství, na který je tato teorie v disertační práci aplikována, je otázka vzniku křesťanské víry, konkretizovaná jako hledání důvodu proměny původního chápání Ježíše jakožto člověka (rabbiho, proroka, politického mesiáše, Bohem zmocněného služebníka) přes užívání židovského titulu Syn člověka v představu Ježíše jako vzkříšeného Syna Božího, Pána a Spasitele. Vstupní hypotézou v tomto případě je, zda mentální reprezentace Ježíše jakožto Syna Božího nejlépe odpovídá - v porovnání s chápáním Ježíše jako Bohem zmocněného člověka a jako Syna člověka - kognitivní charakteristice úspěšné náboženské představy a je tedy nejvhodnější k šíření. Protože se jedná o problematiku, která je úzce spojena s podrobnou analýzou dochovaných textových pramenů, je na úrovni metody zvolena kombinace klasické exegeze vybraných pasáží, analýzy kognitivních struktur sledovaných reprezentací, spolu s tzv. distančním čtením (distant reading). Nejprve jsou pomocí historicko-kritické metody identifikovány v novozákonních, apokryfních i raněkřesťanských textech prvních pěti staletí důležité pasáže vztahující se k analyzovaným představám - Ježíš jako rabbi, prorok, mesiáš, Syn člověka a Syn Boží. Následně jsou tyto představy analyzovány z hlediska jejich kognitivní struktury, přičemž je použit Barrettův systém kódování. V závěrečné části je tento přístup doplněn pomocí počítačové analýzy, aby byla ukázána použitelnost distančního čtení pro interpretaci raně křesťanských textů. Pozornost je soustředěna na analýzu proměny sémantického pole termínů Ježíš, Kristus a Bůh v korpusu řecky psaných raně křesťanských textů prvních pěti staletí našeho letopočtu.

Abstract:

The dissertation aims to investigate what a scientific approach to the study of religion can look like (at the theoretical level) and whether new technologies can be used for computer analysis of extant sources (at the level of method). The aim is to reflect on the relevance and applicability of these new theoretical and methodological approaches by applying them to a specific phenomenon in the field of early Christianity research. The work therefore moves on two levels. The first, theoretical level consists of the question of the possibility, nature and form of a scientific approach to the study of religion. The second, applied level is an attempt to use the scientific approach in the investigation of a particular phenomenon in the field of early Christianity in order to point directly to the benefits and limitations of these theories and methods. At stake, then, is both a question from the field of theory and philosophy of science - whether it is possible to scientifically investigate religion and what form such an approach might take - and a question from the field of religious studies - whether these theories and methods can contribute to research on the origins of Christian faith. The discourse under consideration is the cognitive science of religion, from which Boyer's theory of the minimal counterintuitiveness of religious representations, supplemented and refined by Barrett, is selected. The particular phenomenon in the history of early Christianity research to which this theory is applied in the dissertation is the question of the emergence of Christian faith, concretised as a search for the reason for the transformation of the original understanding of Jesus as man (rabbi, prophet, political messiah, God-empowered servant) through the use of the Jewish title Son of Man into the idea of Jesus as the resurrected Son of God, Lord and Saviour. The initial hypothesis is whether the mental representation of Jesus as the Son of God best fits - in comparison to the understanding of Jesus as a God-empowered man and as the Son of Man - the cognitive characteristics of a successful religious idea and is thus most suitable for dissemination. Since this is an issue that is closely linked to a detailed analysis of the textual sources, a combination of classical exegesis of selected passages, analysis of the cognitive structures of the representations under study, together with so-called distance reading, is chosen at the level of method. First, using the historical-critical method, important passages related to the analysed representations - Jesus as Rabbi, Prophet, Messiah, Son of Man and Son of God - are identified in the New Testament, apocryphal and early Christian texts of the first five centuries. Subsequently, these ideas are analyzed in terms of their cognitive structure, using Barrett's coding system. In the final section, this approach is complemented by computer analysis to show the applicability of distance reading for the interpretation of early Christian texts. The focus is on the analysis of the transformation of the semantic field of the terms Jesus, Christ and God in a corpus of Greek written early Christian texts of the first five centuries CE.
