Breaking Convention: Gaskell's Unruly Heroines

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem neustále se opakujícím v literární tvorbě Elizabeth Gaskellové, a sice nesouladem mezi jejími hrdinkami a tradičními viktoriánskými morálními hodnotami a normami. Hlavní důraz je kladen na analýzu tří ženských postav ze tří různých románů: Ruth Hiltonovú v rovnoměrným románu, Margaret Halovú v Sever a jih a Molly Gibsonovú v Manželky a dcery. Práce zkoumá, jakým způsobem se chování těchto ženských postav odklání od viktoriánských norem a zaměřuje se na analýzu autorského záměru Elizabeth Gaskellové když jim to dovolí. Předmětem zkoumání téhle práce je také vliv průmyslné revoluce a následných společenských změn, které vedou k náboženským problémům a rozpadu rodinné jednotky. Rostoucí potřeba prezentovat křesťanské hodnoty jako nejvhodnější vzorec chování pro všechny třídy v Anglii, je jedním z hlavních motivačních sil, které pohnou Gaskellovou k napsaní třech analyzovaných románů. Otázka zabývající se správným místem ženy ve společnosti je zejména důležitá pro Gaskellovou, stejně jako pěstování svých vlastních morálních zásad a soběstačnosti na rozdíl od slepého následování viktoriánských norem. Nesoulad s viktoriánskými morálními zásadami je u každé ze tří hrdinek řešen různým způsobem. Gaskellová v případě Ruth kritizuje způsob jakým jsou viktoriánské dívky vychováváni a snaží se propagovat schopnost padlých žen vykoupit sebe sama. Vstup Margaret Halové do veřejné sféry jako na místo, které je přísně omezeno na mužské členy společnosti, je pro Viktoriány nepřijatelný. Přesto má ale pozitivní důsledky, když se z Margaret stává veřejná osobnost v podobě podnikatelky; Gaskellová se tak snaží poukázat na nevyhnutelnost a nutnost ženské emancipace. Molly Gibsonová je provinční postava v mnoha aspektech a Gaskellovej konečným prohlášením o tom, že vlastní morální hodnoty jsou pro ni důležitější než konvencionalizmus. Magisterská práce dále také zkoumá způsob, jakým postava matky a její absence ovlivňuje chování hrdinek, a to, jakým způsobem Elizabeth Gaskellová zdůrazňuje dobré úmysly těchto postav a skutečnost, že neexistuje žádné ospravedlnění pro nemravní chování jakkoliv dobrý cíl sleduje.

Abstract:

This Master’s diploma thesis deals with a phenomenon constantly recurring in Elizabeth Gaskell’s literary performance–the unconformity between her heroines and traditional Victorian moral values and norms. Its main focus is on the scrutiny of three female characters from three different novels – Ruth’s Ruth Hilton, North and South’s Margaret Hale and Wives and Daughters’ Molly Gibson. The thesis examines the ways in which these female characters break the Victorian norms and focuses on the analysis of Gaskell’s authorial intentions in letting them do so. It also explores how the industrial revolution and subsequent social changes gave rise to religious problems and the decay of the family unit. The rising need to present Christian values as preferable pattern of behaviour for all classes in England is one of the main inspirational forces that drive Gaskell towards writing the three novels. The question of a woman’s place within the society is particularly important for Gaskell as is the cultivation of one’s individual moral values and self-reliance as opposed to conformation to Victorian standards. The unconformity in each of the three heroines is handled individually and variously. In Ruth’s case, Gaskell criticizes the ignorance Victorian girls are brought up in and tries to make claim for the fallen women’s ability to redeem themselves. Margaret Hale’s entering the public sphere as a place that was strictly limited to male citizens, is unacceptable for the Victorians. Yet, the trespassing has positive consequences after all when Margaret becomes the public figure of businesswoman; Margaret’s author thus tries to point out the inevitability and necessity of female emancipation. Molly Gibson is a provincial character in many aspects; she is Gaskell’s final statement about one’s own moral values being preferred to conventionalism. The thesis also explores the way the figure of a mother and its absence influences the heroine’s conduct, the way in which Gaskell stresses their good intentions in taking the wrong steps and the fact that there is no justification for unmoral behaviour however good the aims were.
