Play therapy as a means of educational and psychosocial support for children in hospital

Abstract:

Anotace Tato diplomová práce je orientována na problematiku dětí hospitalizovaných v nemocnici, na poskytování psychosociální podpory nejen malým pacientům, ale i jejich rodičům. Důležité je i vytváření vhodného prostředí nemocnic, které by podporovalo uzdravovací proces nemocných. Práce se zaměřuje také na nezbytnost vytvoření pozitivního vztahu s dítětem, ve kterém důležitou roli hraje forma komunikace mezi zúčastněnými stranami, závisející na věku, vyspělosti dítěte i na onemocnění, se kterým dítě do nemocnice přišlo. Pobyt v nemocnici má značný vliv na psychiku dítěte, zvláště u dlouhodobých, vleklých, chronických onemocnění, nebo u nemocí s nepříznivou prognózou. Již samotný pobyt dětského pacienta v nemocnici představuje jak pro dítě, tak i pro jeho rodinu značnou zátěž. V poslední době je kladen důraz hlavně na psychickou stránku pacienta, protože byl dokázán vliv pozitivního naladění na funkci imunitního systému, ale i dalších tělesných funkcí, nezbytných pro úspěšnou léčbu. Je rovněž zdůrazňován holistický pohled na onemocnění, které se týká nejen fyzického těla, ale ovlivňuje i psychiku nemocného. Terapie hrou, na kterou práce klade důraz, ale i další metody (terapie smíchem, humorem, artterapie apod.) patří k metodám, umožňující zlepšení emočního prožívání nemoci u dítěte.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of children dwelling in hospitals and with providing psychosocial support not only for children patients but also for their parents. Another important issue is the creation of a suitable environment in hospitals, i.e. such environment that supports the process of patient´s recovery. The work also focuses on the importance of creating a positive relationship between the hospital staff and the child. The form of communication between them plays a crucial role depending on the age of the child, level of its maturity and the illness itself. A stay in hospital has a significant impact on the psyche of the child, especially in case of long-term or chronic illnesses and diseases with unfavourable prognosis. Even the stay of a child patient in hospital itself represents considerable stress both for the child and its family. Recently, the psyche of the patient has been emphasised as it has been proved that positive mood has a significant impact on the function of the immunity system as well as on other body functions, which are essential for a successful treatment. The holistic approach has been underlined as an illness affects not only the physical body but also the psyche of the patient. The play therapy which is emphasised in the thesis, as well as other methods (e.g. therapy of laughter, humour, art therapy) belong to methods which enable an improvement of child´s emotional experience of the illness.
