Dermatoglyphics in corrosion products of metal archaeological finds

Abstract:

Z dosavadních studií vyplývá, že v korozních produktech kovových předmětů z inhumačních hrobů se za příznivých okolností mohou najít stopy dermatoglyfů pohřbených osob. V rámci diplomové práce byl vytvořen přehledný katalog kovových předmětů pocházejících z 10 archeologických lokalit v České republice a Rakousku, na nichž byly dosud nalezeny stopy dermatoglyfů člověka. K tomuto účelu byly využity především archeologické nálezové zprávy a závěry antropologických analýz. Celkem katalog obsahuje 18 jedinců, u nichž byly dále studovány stopy papilárního terénu v korozních produktech. Na fotografických snímcích zachovaných stop papilárního terénu byla upravenou metodikou stanovena tloušťka epidermálních lišt a vypočítána průměrná tloušťka epidermální lišty pro každého jedince (MRBJ). V případech, kdy byly k dispozici antropologické/archeologické odhady věku a pohlaví, byly sledovány souvislosti MRBJ s dožitým věkem a pohlavím. Celkem bylo analyzováno 50 snímků papilárního terénu. Byla zjištěna silná a statisticky vysoce významná korelace (Spearmanův R = 0,90; p < 0,001) mezi průměrnou šířkou epidermálních lišt a odhadem dožitého věku uvedeným v antropologických analýzách, především u nedospělých jedinců. Za použití publikovaných regresních rovnic byly vypočítány odhady věku podle MRBJ a tyto odhady porovnány s odhady dožitého věku uváděnými v antropologických analýzách. Jedním z důvodů mohou být tafonomické změny epidermis při tlení těla. Bylo zjištěno, že odhady věku podle MRBJ mají tendenci podhodnocovat odhady věku založené na antropologických analýzách. U dospělých byl hodnocen pohlavní dimorfismus v MRBJ. Tato studie ukazuje, že korozní produkty kovů mohou být nosičem nových informací o biologii lidí pohřbených na kostrových pohřebištích.

Abstract:

The previous studies showed that under favorable conditions traces of dermatoglyphics can be found in the corrosion products of metal artifacts located in inhumation graves. In this thesis a catalogue of metal artifacts with traces of dermatoglyphics from ten archaeological sites in Czech Republic and Austria was created. For this purpose, archaeological reports and results of anthropological assessments were primarily used as information sources. The catalogue consists of 18 human individuals (skeletons). Their epidermal surface (friction skin) was further studied on traces in metal corrosion products. Epidermal ridge breadth was measured on images of preserved dermatoglyphic traces and mean epidermal ridge breadth for each individual (MRBJ) was calculated using a modified method. In cases where anthropological/archaeological estimates of age and sex were available relationships of MRBJ with age at death and sex estimates were evaluated. In total, 50 images of dermatoglyphic traces were analyzed. Strong and statistically highly significant correlation between age at death estimates and mean epidermal ridge breadth was found, especially for a subsample of subadults. Age at death estimates were also calculated from MRBJ using available regression equations and, subsequently, these estimates were compared with estimates based on skeletal remains. It was found that age estimates from MRBJ tend to be lower than skeletal age estimates. One of the reasons could be taphonomic changes of the epidermis during body decomposition. In adults, sexual dimorphism in MRBJ was evaluated. This study showed that the corrosion products of metals grave items could be a carrier of new kind of information on the biology of the people buried in the skeletal burial sites.
