Analysis of relations between attitudes to respondent’s own nation and attitudes to immigrants

Abstract:

Tato práce se snaží zodpovědět na otázku, zda mezi vztahem k vlastnímu národu a vztahem k přistěhovalcům existuje určitá souvislost. Sekundární analýza pracuje s daty Evropského výzkumu hodnot z let 1991, 1999 a 2008, díky čemuž je možné vyhodnotit určité změny, ke kterým v průběhu let došlo. Teoretická část práce rozebírá nejdůležitější koncepty, jako jsou národ, nacionalismus, patriotismus či migrace, které jsou v souvislosti s tématem práce považovány za stěžejní. Výzkumná část práce se pak v první řadě věnuje situaci, která panuje v České republice ve vztahu k vlastnímu národu a ve vztahu k přistěhovalcům obecně, odkrývá mimo jiné souvislost obou vztahů s věkem či nejvyšším dosaženým vzděláním respondentů. V závěru empirické části je analyzována asociace vztahu k vlastnímu národu se vztahem k přistěhovalcům, která se sice potvrdila, nicméně nikterak významným způsobem. I když mají Češi ke svému národu kladný vztah, jsou na něj hrdí či k němu pociťují nejsilnější příslušnost, neznamená to automaticky, že jsou současně xenofobní a nepřátelští vůči přistěhovalcům žijícím v České republice.

Abstract:

This thesis tries to answer whether there is any connection between the quality of relationship to one’s own nation on one hand and to immigrants to their country on the other. The secondary analysis works with The European Values Study data from the years 1991, 1999 and 2008. This makes it possible to evaluate changes, which might have occurred over the years. The theoretical part discusses important concepts such as nation, nationalism, patriotism and migration, which are considered crucial for the thesis. Research of the work is primarily dedicated to the situation in the Czech Republic, focusing on the relation to own nation and to immigrants in general, revealing the connection of those relations with age and highest education of the respondents. In the conclusion of the empirical part, the association of the relationships to one’s own nation and to immigrants is analyzed, confirming the connection, however, not very significantly. Though the Czechs might have a positive relationship to their own nation, feel proud of it or even feel the strongest affiliation to it, it does not automatically imply that they are at the same time xenophobic or hostile to immigrants living in the Czech Republic.
