The Need to Find Better Ways to Occupy the World/Processing Mechanisms in Contemporary Art

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce vychází z přesvědčení, že současný umělec se ve své vlastní činnosti nemůže vyhnout reakci na již existující díla, artefakty, formální struktury nebo ideje. Iniciačním východiskem disertační práce je vývoj a proměna teze, že nic nevzniklo "ex nihilo", konzumace je zároveň produkcí a že podstatou není dlouhodobě postupovat směrem kupředu, ale jde spíše o zkoumání a vymýšlení nových sestav nebo nového použití. Název disertační práce byl inspirován prací francouzského teoretika umění a kurátora Nicolase Bourriauda. Práce je zaměřena na pracovní mechanismy a tendence v současném vizuálním umění, částečně ve vztahu k médiu fotografie. Za klíčový moment problematiky můžeme považovat objev technického obrazu, možnost jeho technické reprodukovatelnosti a masového šíření. Disertační práce se věnuje celému spektru aktuálních tendencí na poli vizuálního umění. Přináší přehled zásadních událostí, které ovlivnily pohled kritiky na vztah autora a uměleckého díla. Zahrnuje interpretaci problematiky institucionální kritiky v kontextu umění. Dále se zabývá fenoménem práce s archivem v současném umění. Věnuje se problematice spekulativního obratu v kontinentální filozofii a zabývá se vlivem aktuálních filozofických proudů na oblast teorie umění. Shrnuje různé umělecké přístupy z období po zkušenosti s internetovou sítí, které jsou v prostoru umění označovány termínem postinternet art. Dotýká se také aktuální problematiky antropocénu, která je předmětem zájmu napříč vědními disciplínami, politikou a bezprostředně se dotýká nás všech. Předposlední kapitola shrnuje okolnosti vzniku teoretické části práce a celkový průběh mého doktorského studia. Teoretickou část doktorské práce uzavírá text s názvem Running in Haze, ve kterém reflektuji zásadní momenty vlastní umělecké praxe, abych vytvořil kontext pro obhajobu autorského výstavního projektu pod stejnojmenným názvem Running in Haze, který jsem připravil pro Dům umění města Brna v prostorách Galerie G99.

Abstract:

The topic of the presented work is based on the conviction that for a contemporary artist it is nearly impossible to avoid in one's own work a reaction to existing work, formal structures or ideas. The aim of this dissertation work is to develop and transform the theory that includes the claim that nothing has been created "ex nihilo", that consumption is also production, and that the basic objective is not to work long-term on advancement forward, but to examine and think of new sets of knowledge or new uses. The name of the general topic of this dissertation work was inspired by the work of French art theorist and curator Nicolas Bourriaud. The text is focused on working mechanisms and tendencies in contemporary visual art, partially in relation to photography. We can consider to a great extent the discovery of the technical image and ways of reducing it and distributing it through technical means to be a key milestone. This dissertation work focuses on a whole range of current tendencies being played out in the field of visual arts. The theoretical work brings an overview of important events that have influenced the view of critique in relation to the author and the artistic work. It includes interpretation of the issue of institutional critique associated in the context of art. It also focuses on the phenomenon of work with an archive in the field of contemporary art. It deals with the issue of speculative turn in continental philosophy and the influence of current philosophical trends on art theory. It summarises various artistic approaches from the period following experience with the internet, with use of the expression post-internet art. The theoretical work also touches on the current phenomenon of anthropocene, which is a subject across all scientific disciplines and directly relates to all of us. The next to last chapter summarises the circumstances of the establishment of theoretical work and the overall course of doctorate study. The theoretical work is concluded with a section entitled Running in Haze, in which I reflect on important moments in my own artistic experience in order to create context for defence of the exhibit under the same name, Running in Haze, which I have prepared for the Art House in Brno at the premises of Gallery G99.
