Ling Shuhua's Stance towards the Status of Women in Chinese Society and the Influence of Virginia Woolf

Abstract:

The goal of the bachelor thesis is to examine whether the work of the English author Virginia Woolf and her mutual correspondence with Ling Shuhua, affected Ling Shuhua’s approach towards the issue of women’s status in her literary works. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part discusses historical events and literary conditions of Chinese authors in the beginning of the 20th century. The thesis continues by presenting the work of Ling Shuhua and proceeds by clarifying her relationship and correspondence with Virginia Woolf. The second part is dedicated to the literary analysis of Ling Shuhua’s short stories and the acquired knowledge is compared with the literary analysis of the autobiography Ancient Melodies. The obtained material is consecutively examined using the information on the correspondence of the two authors and the work of Virginia Woolf. The result of the thesis discusses the change of Ling Shuhua’s stance towards the status of women observed in the autobiography Ancient Melodies, caused by the influence of Virginia Woolf.

Abstract:

Cieľom bakalárskej práce je preskúmať, či tvorba anglickej spisovateľky Virginie Woolfovej a ich vzájomná korešpondencia mali dopad na zmenu postoja Ling Shuhua k problematike postavenia ženy v jej literárnej tvorbe. Práca pozostáva z dvoch častí, pričom prvá časť pojednáva o historických udalostiach a literárnych podmienkach čínskych spisovateľov na začiatku 20. storočia. Pokračuje predstavením tvorby Ling Shuhua a prechádza do objasnenia vzťahu a korešpondencie s Virginiou Woolfovou. Druhá časť sa venuje literárnej analýze poviedkovej tvorby Ling Shuhua, ktorej nadobudnuté poznatky sú využité pre komparáciu s literárnym rozborom autobiografie Ancient Melodies. Vzniknutý materiál je následne skúmaný so získanými informáciami o korešpondencii spisovateliek a s tvorbou Virginie Woolfovej. Výsledkom práce sú zmeny postoja Ling Shuhua k ženskej problematike v autobiografii Ancient Melodies spôsobené vplyvom Virginie Woolfovej.
