Superstitiousness in relation to performance in cognitive and motor task

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem pověrčivosti na úspěšnost v řešení kognitivní a motorické úlohy. Cílem magisterské diplomové práce bylo zjistit, zda jsou vysokoškolští studenti, kteří se nacházejí v situaci aktivující pozitivně orientovanou pověrčivost, úspěšnější v řešení motorické a kognitivní úlohy než studenti, kteří se v takové situaci nenacházejí. Dalším cílem pak bylo zjistit, zda se ženy studentky a muži studenti liší v míře pověrčivosti. Výzkum zahrnoval dva experimenty, jeden se věnoval vlivu pověrčivosti na úspěšnost v kognitivní úloze, druhý pak vlivu pověrčivosti na úspěšnost v úloze motorické. Prvního experimentu se zúčastnilo 39 vysokoškolských studentů. Druhého experimentu se zúčastnilo 36 vysokoškolských studentů. Kognitivní úloha spočívala ve vytváření českých slov z předložených písmen. Jako motorická úloha byl zvolen hod míčem na koš. Účastníci výzkumu dále vy-plnili také inventář zjišťující míru pověrčivostí. Bylo zjištěno, že jedinci, kteří se nacházejí v situaci aktivující pozitivně orientovanou pověrčivost, jsou úspěšnější v řešení motorické úlohy než jedinci, kteří v této situaci nejsou. U kognitivního úkolu se signifikantní rozdíl neprojevil. Neprokázalo se také, že by intervence v podobě pozitivně orientované pověrčivosti zlepšovala výkon v daných úlohách více ženám studentkám než mužům studentům. Zjistili jsme, že ženy studentky jsou v našem souboru pověrčivější než muži studenti, a to jak v kontextu celkového skóre použitého inventáře, tak i v rámci skupiny pozitivních pověr.

Abstract:

The master's thesis deals with the influence of superstitiousness on the success in solving cognitive and motor tasks. The aim of the master's thesis was to ascertain whether university students who are in a situation activating positively oriented superstitiousness are more successful in solving a motor and cognitive task than students who are not in such a situation. Another aim was to ascertain whether female and male students differ in their level of superstitiousness. The research involved two experiments, one devoted to the effect of superstitiousness on success in a cognitive task, and second devoted to the effect of superstitiousness on success in a motor task. Thirty-nine undergraduate students participated in the first experiment. Thirty-six undergraduate students participated in the second experiment. The cognitive task consisted in creating Czech words from the submitted letters. As motor task, a ball throw to the basket was chosen. The participants also filled out an inventory measuring the degree of superstitiousness. It was found that individuals who are in a situation activating positively oriented superstitiousness are more successful in solving the motor task than individuals who are not in this situation. There was no significant difference in the cognitive task. The positive superstitiousness intervention did not improve performance in the cognitive and motor task more for female students than for male students. We found that female students were more superstitious than male students in our sample, both in the context of the overall score of the inventory used and within the group of positive superstitions.
