Science fiction patří mezi nejpopulárnější filmové žánry současnosti. Filmy mívají sto milionové rozpočty. S vysokými náklady je spojeno očekávání vysokého výdělku. Proto se sci-fi snímky většinou snaží oslovit co největší počet diváků. Z toho důvodu je jim často vyčítána nedostatečná inovace a důraz na speciální efekty. Science fiction is one of the most popular film genres. These films often have huge budgets. This fact causes expectations of big income. That is why science fiction films try to address as much people as possible. Therefore they are often criticized for insufficient inovation and emphasis on special effects.
