DNS firewall as a SOC Service

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zmapováním možností využití DNS firewallu jako služby bezpečnostního dohledového centra (SOC). Práce nejprve popisuje model fungování SOCu, včetně jeho rolí a hlavních technologií. Následně představuje principy Domain Name System(DNS) se zaměřením na výzvy v kybernetické bezpečnosti. Dále mapuje možnosti technologie Response Policy Zones (RPZ). Stanovuje kritéria, na základě kterých je vybráno vhodné řešení. To je poté vyhodnoceno v rámci pilotního nasazení, včetně základního výkonnostního testování, s důrazem na fungování v rámci SOCu. V závěru práce představuje další možnosti vyhodnocování DNS logů.

Abstract:

This thesis maps the possibilities of using a DNS firewall as Security Operations Center (SOC) service. First, it describes the model of operation of SOC, including its roles and main technologies. Then, it introduces the principles of the Domain Name System (DNS) focusing on the cyber security challenges. Furthermore, it describes the capabilities of the Response Policy Zones (RPZ) technology. It determines the criteria based on which an appropriate solution is selected. This is then evaluated as a part of a pilot deployment, including basic performance testing, with an emphasis on functioning within the SOC. Finally, it presents additional options for evaluating DNS logs.
