Relationships between the concepts of generativity and character strengths in the elderly

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na prozkoumání souvislostí generativity a silných stránek charakteru u seniorů. Současně jsou zjišťovány vztahy mezi generativitou a demografickými charakteristikami. Byl proveden kvantitativní výzkum, pro jehož účely byly využity následující metody: Loyola Generativity Scale ke zjištění generativního zájmu, Generativity Behavioral Checklist ke zjištění generativního jednání a Dotazník charakteristických silných stránek, jenž je zkrácenou verzí Values in Action Inventory of Strengths a slouží k identifikaci silných stránek charakteru. Výzkumný soubor sestával ze 151 osob ve věkovém rozmezí 60 až 75 let (68 % žen, průměrný věk 69,2 let). Byly zjištěny genderové rozdíly v míře generativity a rovněž rozdíly v míře generativního zájmu mezi skupinami dle velikosti místa bydliště. Korelační analýza ukázala negativní vztah mezi věkem a generativním jednáním. Dále bylo zjištěno, že generativní zájem i generativní jednání souvisí s láskou k učení, týmovou prací a vitalitou. K odhalení prediktorů generativity byly použity ctnosti coby množiny silných stránek. Nejvýznamnějšími prediktory generativního zájmu byly transcendence, lidskost a moudrost, jediným významným prediktorem generativního jednání se ukázala být moudrost.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned to exploration of relationships between generativity and character strengths in elderly. Simultaneously there are discovered relationships between generativity and demographic characteristics. The quantitative reseasch was made, for its purposes were used following methods: Loyola Generativity Scale for detection of generative concern, Generativity Behavioral Checklist for detection of generative behaviour and Signature Strengths Test which is the shorter version of Values in Action Inventory of Strengths and i tis used for identification of strengths. The research group consisted of 151 persons in the age range of 60 – 75 years (68 % of women, average age 69.2 years). There were found out gender differences in the degree of generativity and also differences in the degree of generative concern between groups according to size of the place of residence. Correlation analysis showed negative relationship between age and generative behaviour. It was also discovered that both generative concern and behaviour is connected to love of learning, teamwork and vitality. To reveal predictors of generativity there were used virtues as sets of strengths. The most significant predictors of generative concern were transcendence, humanity and wisdom, the only significant predictor of generative behaviour proved to be the wisdom.
