The portrayal of EU immigrants in British newspapers during the campaign before referendum on Brexit.

Diplomová práce se zabývá rozdíly mezi bulvárním tiskem a seriózním tiskem při zobrazování imigrace z EU během kampaně před referendum ohledně Brexitu. Jako zástupce bulvárního tisku byl pro analýzu vybrán deník The Sun a deník The Daily Telegraph byl vybrán pro reprezentaci seriózního tisku. Metodologická část se opírá o kritickou diskurzivní analýzu a diskurzivně-historický přístup definován Ruth Wodak. Analýza rovněž pracuje s typy diskurzivních strategií nominace, argumentace/legitimizace a predikace. Analýza ukázala, že oba typy novin popisují imigraci z EU neutrálním a spíše negativním způsobem. Potvrdilo se původní očekávání, že The Sun využívá extrémnější výrazy při zobrazování imigrace z EU. Naproti tomu The Daily Telegraph se snažil zůstat ve více neutrální rovině, nicméně i přesto že poskytl prostor i pro odpůrce Brexitu, celkové vyznění postoje deníku bylo jasně negativní vůči imigraci z EU a převládaly zde články podporující Brexit.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis focuses on differences between tabloid and broadsheet newspapers in portraying EU immigration during the campaign before referendum on Brexit. For the purpose of the analysis, The Sun was selected as the representative of tabloids and The Daily Telegraph as the representative of broadsheets. The methodology of the thesis is based on Critical Discourse Analysis and Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) by Ruth Wodak and the types of discursive strategies of nomination, argumentation/ legitimization and predication. The analysis shows that both the newspapers describe EU immigration in a non neutral, rather negative way. The Sun was expected to use more extreme expressions to refer about the immigration and this hypothesis was confirmed. Regarding The Daily Telegraph, it was assumed that the broadsheet would try to stay more neutral in describing EU immigration. Even though it provided more space in the articles for the opposite side, the negative description of EU immigration prevailed and the amount of the articles supporting Brexit predominated.
