Marginality in Claude Jasmin's novels

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of marginality in the novels La corde au cou (Rope Around the Neck), Éthel et le terroriste (Ethel and the Terrorist) and Pleure pas, Germaine (Don’t Cry, Germaine) by the Quebecois writer Claude Jasmin published in the first half of the 1960s. The theoretical part briefly introduces the history of Quebec from the 1950s until the 1970s as well as the personality and the work of the author. Furthermore, it also presents the concept of marginality from a sociological and literary point of view. The analytical part comprises a definition of the corpus, a summary of the novels and their narrative analysis. Marginality is analysed in the two main chapters. While the first chapter studies the content and focuses on the types of marginality, the second one deals with the construction of texts and the manifestations of marginality.

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá tématem marginality v románech La corde au cou (Provaz na krku), Éthel et le terroriste (Éthel a terorista) a Pleure pas, Germaine (Neplač, Germaino) quebeckého spisovatele Clauda Jasmina vydaných v první polovině 60. let 20. století. V teoretické části je krátce přiblížena historie Quebeku od 50. do 70. let 20. století, osoba a dílo autora a v neposlední řadě se zde nachází sociologický pohled na marginalitu, který je následován pohledem literárním. Analytická část zahrnuje definici korpusu, představení jednotlivých románů z hlediska obsahového i naratologického a dále je ve dvou hlavních kapitolách analyzována samotná marginalita – v první kapitole zaměřené na obsah jsou to druhy marginality, ve druhé kapitole, která se více zabývá textovou konstrukcí, její projevy.
