Singaporean business environment and its potential from the perspective of Czech technology start-ups

Abstract:

Singapur se v poslední dekádě pravidelně umisťuje na prvních místech žebříčku Doing Business jako stát velice nakloněný podnikání. Stává se proto mnohdy cílovou destinací, kam míří ICT start-upy, chtějí-li nadále vyvíjet svůj produkt/službu a pokračovat v růstu, nestačí-li jim domácí trh. Z toho důvodu je hlavním cílem této práce vymezit silné a slabé stránky singapurského podnikatelského prostředí včetně identifikace bariér, kterým české technologické start‑upy čelí v případě vstupu na singapurský trh. Vedlejším cílem je pak ověřit, jak vnímají singapurské podnikatelské prostředí vybrané české technologické start-upy, jež mají s tímto trhem zkušenost, a zjistit, zda teoretické poznatky korespondují s reálnými zkušenostmi předmětných technologických start-upů. První kapitola této práce vymezuje pojem „start-up" a dále popisuje vývoj start-upů, faktory úspěšnosti a výzvy, kterým čelí. V druhé kapitole jsou popsány metody hodnocení podnikatelského prostředí, jež jsou dále v kapitole třetí aplikovány právě na singapurský trh. Závěr práce tvoří čtvrtá kapitola, v níž jsou shrnuty poznatky z vlastního kvalitativního šetření, kterého se zúčastnily dva české ICT start-upy.

Abstract:

Over the past decade, Singapore has regularly topped the Doing Business rankings as a very business-friendly nation. Therefore, it is often the destination of choice for ICT start-ups if they want to continue developing their product/service, continue to grow, and if the domestic market is not enough. Hence, the main objective of this thesis is to define the strengths and weaknesses of the Singaporean business environment, including the identification of barriers that Czech technology start-ups face when entering the Singaporean market. A secondary objective is to examine the perception of the Singaporean business environment by selected Czech technology start-ups that have experience in this market and to determine whether the theoretical findings correspond with the actual experience of the technology start-ups in question. The first chapter of this thesis defines the term "start-up" and then describes the development of start-ups, their success factors, and the challenges they face. The second chapter describes the methods for assessing the entrepreneurial environment, which are then applied specifically to the Singapore market in chapter three. Finally, the thesis concludes with chapter four, which summarises the findings from qualitative research involving two Czech ICT start-ups.
