Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá anglickou výslovností politiků patřících ke třem jazykovým podskupinám indoevropské jazykové rodiny – k jazykům slovanským (čeština a polština), románským (španělština a portugalština), germánským (němčina a nizozemština) – a výslovnostních chyb, kterých se dopouštějí. Jejím cílem je prokázat hypotézu, že politici mluvící jazykem patřícím ke germánské jazykové podskupině mluví anglicky lépe než jejich protějšky patřící do slovanské a románské podskupiny. V teoretické části jsou definovány zvukové systémy všech těchto jazyků a jsou srovnány s jazykem anglickým (použity jsou práce známých lingvistů - např. A. C. Gimson, P. Roach, R. Wiese, M. M. Azevedo, or B. Collins and I. Mees). Dále jsou zde představeny a definovány nejčastější výslovnostní chyby, kterých se nerodilí mluvčí dopouštějí. Výzkumná část této práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. První je zaměřena na analýzu projevů jednotlivých politiků. Projevy jsou foneticky přepsány, výslovnostní chyby vyznačeny a porovnány. Druhá část je zaměřena na analýzu dat shromážděných při průzkumu, jehož základem je krátký dotazník rozeslaný dobrovolníkům z řad studentů angličtiny, kteří měli za úkol poslechnout si projevy jednotlivých politiků a zhodnotit jejich angličtinu. Obě tyto části potvrzují hypotézu a ukazují, že politici pocházející z Německa a Nizozemska mluví anglicky lépe než jejich protějšky z České republiky, Polska, Španělska a Portugalska.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with English pronunciation of the politicians belonging to three subgroups of Indo-European language group, to Slavic languages (Czech and Polish), Romance languages (Spanish and Portuguese), and Germanic languages (German and Dutch), and with their most common pronunciation errors. The objective of this study is to prove the hypothesis that the politicians whose native language belongs to Germanic language subgroup speak better English than their counterparts belonging to Slavic and Romance language subgroups. The sound systems of all the languages concerned are defined and compared to that of the English language in the theoretical section (the works of well-known linguists such as A. C. Gimson, P. Roach, R. Wiese, M. M. Azevedo, or B. Collins and I. Mees, are used). The most common pronunciation mistakes made by the non-native speakers of English are also introduced and defined here. The research section of this study is divided into two parts. The first one is focused on analysing the speeches given by the politicians. The speeches are phonetically transcribed, and the pronunciation errors are highlighted and compared. The second part is focused on analysing the data collected from the survey based on a short questionnaire. It was sent out to students of English whose task was to listen to the speeches and assess the quality of their English. Both these parts prove the hypothesis and show that the politicians coming from Germany and the Netherlands speak better English than their counterparts from the Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, and Portugal.
