Idea of Institutionalization of Knowledge in Modern Period: F. Bacon and The Royal Society of London

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá myšlenkami Francise Bacona, které se týkaly problematiky institucionalizace vědění. Francis Bacon byl v rámci svého projektu Velikého obnovení věd přesvědčen o nezbytnosti vytvoření specifické vědecké instituce, která by spojovala veliké množství vědců a podpořila tak vývoj a pokrok vědy ve společnosti k jejímu obecnému užitku. Obraz ideální společnosti pak Bacon popsal ve svém utopickém díle Nová Atlantis, ve kterém zároveň vylíčil představu vědecké instituce, kterou nazývá Šalamounův dům. Rysy této instituce, které Bacon v tomto díle popisuje, jsou srovnatelné s již reálně existujícími raně novověkými centry vědění, jako jsou botanické zahrady, anatomická divadla, kabinety kuriozit, laboratoře a observatoře. Královská londýnská společnost byla založena roku 1660. Pravidelné shromažďování lékařů, spisovatelů, obchodníků, duchovních, soudců a právníků, jimiž byli zakladatelé a první členové Společnosti, právě v této době přispělo k budování specifické formy myšlení, kterou je charakterizována celá etapa tzv. novověku. Časopis Královské londýnské společnosti, který se stal nejvlivnějším vědeckým časopisem vědeckého světa, byl založen roku 1665. Tato diplomová práce poukazuje na důležitost komunikace Společnosti s ostatními vědci i společností právě prostřednictvím Philosophical Transactions. Pozornost je rovněž věnována prvnímu editorovi časopisu - Henrymu Oldenburgovi. Poslední část diplomové práce se zabývá dalšími etapami vývoje Královské londýnské společnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis I dealt with the ideas of Francis Bacon, which were concerned about the dilemma of institutionalization of the knowledge, the already existing early modern centres of the knowledge, and the most important part is focused on the oldest scientific institution today´s world ? Royal Society of London. Francis Bacon was - within his science project The Great Instauration - convinced of the necessity of creating of a specific scientific institution that combines a great number of scientists and maintain the development and progress of science in society towards its general utility. An ideal vision of science was defined by Bacon in his utopian work New Atlantis, where he at the same time described his idea of a scientific institution called Salomon's House. Characteristics of this institution, which Bacon described in his work, were comparable with the already existing early modern centres of the knowledge, such as botanical gardens, anatomy theatres, natural history collections, laboratories and observatories. The Royal Society was created in 1660. The first Fellows of the Royal Society were courtiers, clergymen, doctors, lawyers, writers and merchants and they cooperated because of fascinating of the possibility of a new way of thinking ? the ?new philosophy? based on first-hand observation and experiment to understand the world. This thinking was radically different from the old philosophy based on Aristotle. Philosophical Transactions, scientific journal of Royal Society, was established in 1665 and became the single most influential such journal in the world. The thesis points out to importance of this communication system taking into account the official aims of the Royal Society of London. The attention is also paid to the important character of the story of Philosophical Transactions - Henry Oldenburg. Last part of thesis is focused on the next centuries of development of the Society.
