Two hemispheres – two worlds: Facts, fictions and speculations about a dual nature of brain processing and its consequences for the contemporary western society

Abstract:

Disertační práce rozvíjí teorii hemisférické asymetrie formulovanou Iainem McGilchristem. Jsou identifikovány jak hlavní obecné důvody pro přesvědčení o důležitosti rozdílů ve fungování mozkových hemisfér, tak konkrétní způsoby, jak se od sebe hemisféry liší. Poté je zkoumáno normativní tvrzení představované teorie. Je zkoumáno, v jakém slova smyslu je obhajitelné tvrzení, že bychom měli obecně spíše preferovat dominanci pravohemisférického fungování nad levohemisférickým fungováním. Je ukázáno, že některé pravohemisférické funkce jsou nezbytné pro integraci fungování obou hemisfér, a proto je její dominance nutná pro využití výhod obou hemisfér. Tento spekulativní závěr je dále testován v celospolečenském měřítku. Jsou postupně obhájena tvrzení, že současná západní společnost vykazuje rysy levohemisférické dominance a že palčivé problémy současné společnosti úzce souvisí s levohemisférickými charakteristikami naší společnosti. Následně je načrtnuto několik společenských změn, které by mohly přispět ke zlepšení hemisférické vyváženosti naší společnosti a také ke vyřešení celospolečenských problémů. Nakonec jsou identifikována omezení představované teorie.

Abstract:

In my doctoral thesis I elaborate on Iain McGilchrist’s theory of hemispheric asymmetry. I identify the main reasons for believing in the significance of the difference between the two brain hemispheres and I explicate specific ways in which they differ (mostly) on the functional level. With these dissimilarities in mind, I explore McGilchrist’s proposition that right-hemispheric ways of cognitive functioning should be in some way dominant over left-hemispheric functioning. This claim could be defended insofar as the right hemisphere operates in a more integrative manner (whereas the left hemisphere in a more exclusive manner) and its dominance is therefore needed for an optimal utilization of the advantages of both hemispheres. In the most comprehensive part of my dissertation I try to identify the most salient features of our society and I speculate how these relate to hemispheric differences. I find a surprising convergence of unilateral dominance. The key features of our society – i.e. technologization, quantification, individualism – seem all to be more in tune with the left-hemispheric way of functioning. As could be expected from the theoretical perspective, there also seems to be a strong link between these left-hemispheric societal features and the most pressing problems of our society – an ecological crisis, a social inequality, a crisis of community and a rise of mental illness. I conclude my thesis with some preliminary suggestions for establishing a more balanced society and review limitations of the presented theory.
