Human-animal Relationship in the Ancient World

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem starověkého člověka ke zvířatům. Období starověku začíná přibližně ve 4. tisíciletí př. n. l. a za jeho konec je obvykle považován pád Římské říše v roce 476 n. l. Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl popsat a zhodnotit přístup ke zvířatům civilizací starověkého Středomoří (Přední Východ, Židé, Egypt, Řecko a Řím) na základě dochovaných literárních pramenů a novodobé sekundární literatury. Zaměřuje se na zvířata domestikovaná, zvířata jako oběti i jako potravu a domácí mazlíčky. Cílem práce je také zodpovědět otázku, zda byla zvířata ve starověku nějakým způsobem chráněna a zda měla nějaká práva.

Abstract:

This bachelor diploma thesis deals with the human–animal relationship in antiquity. The period of antiquity starts approximately in the 4th millennium BC and as its end is commonly considered the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD. The bachelor thesis aims to describe and evaluate the attitude towards animals of the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean (the Near East, Jews, Egypt, Greece and Rome), based on the extant literary sources and modern secondary literature. It focuses on the domesticated animals, animals as offerings and as food and pets. The aim of the thesis is also to answer the question, whether animals in antiquity were protected in certain way and whether they had any rights.
