Abstract:

Tématem této magisterské diplomové práce jsou vypravěčské strategie užité vypravěči dvou románů Vladimira Nabokova. Za pomoci rozličných vypravěčských taktik vnáší hlavní hrdinové románů Despair (zoufalství) a The Real Life of Sebastian Knight (pravý životopis Sebastiana Knighta) do vyprávění značnou míru nejasnosti a dvojznačnosti. Tato práce se zaměřuje na roli intelektuální nadřazenosti vypravěčů, na jejich znalosti v oblasti cizích jazyků, schopnosti zvýraznění (foregrounding) jazykových prostředků na úkor obsahu, na moc, kterou hrdinové disponují jakožto vypravěči, na jejich práci s fantazií a jinými zdroji, na otázku jejich identity a duševního zdraví, nebo také na to, jak se vypravěčům daří odlákávat čtenářskou pozornost z problematických prvků příběhu ke své vlastní osobnosti. Práce obsahuje také srovnání analyzovaných románů a podrobný přehled naratologických teorií týkajících se nespolehlivých vypravěčů. Nabokov’s Unreliable Narrators volně navazuje na bakalářskou diplomovou práci s názvem Becoming Lolita, jež pojednává o slavné Nabokovově knize Lolita.

Abstract:

This thesis describes some of the narratorial strategies that enable the protagonists/narrators of Vladimir Nabokov’s novels Despair and The Real Life of Sebastian Knight to introduce ambiguity and uncertainty into the narrative. It examines the role of the narrators’ intellectual superiority, their proficiency in foreign languages, their capacities in foregrounding form over the content, the powers they have at their disposal thanks to their position of narrators and characters of the novel in one person, their work with imagination and other sources, the question of their identity and sanity, or how the narrators manage to shift the attention of their readers from the story to its teller. The thesis also contains comparison of the two novels and a detailed overview of theoretical approaches to unreliable narration including different classifications. It loosely relates to the diplomate’s bachelor thesis called “Becoming Lolita” on a novel by Vladimir Nabokov.
