Morphometric research on the fox population of the Würmian glaciation period in Moravia

Abstract:

Předložena diplomová práce se zabývá morfometrii kraniálního a postkraniálního skeletu fosilních populací lišek (Vulpes vulpes a Alopex lagopus). Materiál pochází z mladopaleolitických lokalit gravettienu a magdalenienu na Moravě. Práce se zaměřila na porovnání jednotlivých kosterních elementů mezi liškou obecnou a polární a na osteometrickou analýzu materiálu z jednotlivých lokalit. Data byla statisticky vyhodnocena a konfrontována s recentním materiálem, s českými a zahraničními studiemi a byly definovány variační šíře jednotlivých druhů. Největší metrické rozdíly v naměřených průměrných hodnotách byly zjištěny na recentním kraniálním skeletu. Tyto odlišnosti byly podpořeny i morfologicky Ve fosilním materiálu nebyl kraniální skelet zachován. U recentního i fosilního postkraniálního materiálu dochází k prolínání variačních šíří studovaných druhů, avšak průměrné hodnoty jsou odlišné. Morfologické odlišnosti nebyly pozorovány. Při konfrontaci metriky fosilního materiálu se zahraničními autory lze potvrdit zvětšování kraniálního a postkraniálního skeletu středoevropských zástupců Alopex lagopus v průběhu pleistocénu. Výsledky potvrzují i domněnku o vymírání Alopex lagopus na konci pleistocénu.

Abstract:

The presented diploma´s thesis deals with the cranial morphometrics and postcranial skeleton the fossil populations of foxes (Vulpes vulpes and Alopex lagopus). Material comes from The Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian and Magdalenian sites in Moravia. The paper focuses on comparisons of different skeletal elements between the red fox and the arctic fox and osteometric analysis of material from various sites. Data were statistically evaluated and confronted with the recent material, with Czech and foreign studies, and defined the extent of variation of the individual species. The biggest differences in the metric measured the average values were found to recent cranial skeleton. These differences were supported by the morphology in the fossil material was preserved cranial skeleton. For the fossil recent postcranial material there is overlap in variational spread both species, but average values are different. Morphological differences were not observed. Confronting metrics fossil material with the foreign authors can be confirmed by enlarging cranial and postcranial skeleton Alopex lagopus Central representatives during the Pleistocene. The results confirm the assumption of extinction Alopex lagopus at the end of the Pleistocene.
