The Role of Ritual and the Character of Community in Jane Austen's Fiction

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce je komunita jakožto jedna z postav v románech Jane Austenové. Zaměřila jsem se hlavně na Pýchu a předsudek, Emmu a Annu Elliotovou, ale zmiňuji i ostatní díla. Zabývám se tím, jak komunita ovlivňuje názory jednotlivců a jak sama působí jako tvůrce názorů a hodnot. Rozebírám vztah jednotlivých postav ke svým komunitám, míru jejich závislosti na těchto komunitách a postavení, které v nich jednotlivci zaujímají. Také řeším otázku, zda je postavení jednotlivce v komunitě totožné s jeho společenským postavením. Jedna z kapitol je zaměřená na to, jak komunita vnímá mravy a chování svých členů a do jaké míry může jednotlivec s tímto kolektivním vnímáním manipulovat a využívat je ve svůj prospěch. Důležitou součástí každodenního života komunity jsou rituály, a proto jsem jednu kapitolu věnovala rituálům (návštěvy, tanec, konverzace, sňatek), pomocí kterých Austenová ukazuje, a někdy také zesměšňuje, pravidla, jimiž se komunita řídí. Závěrem shrnuji, proč je komunita plnohodnotnou postavou v románech. Popisuji rozdílné role, které Austenová komunitám v jednotlivých románech přiděluje a jak tyto rozdílené role vedou ke stejným výsledkům, totiž ke sňatkům hlavních hrdinek.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis analyzes the community as one of the characters in the novels of Jane Austen. I focus mainly on Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Persuasion, but I also mention other works, if required. One section describes how the community influences the opinions of individuals and how it acts as a creator of views and values. I analyze the relationship of the individuals to their communities, the degree of their dependence on these communities and the positions the individuals hold in them. The thesis also deals with the question of whether an individual's position in the community is the same as his position in the society. One chapter focuses on how the community perceives the manners and behavior of its members and to what extent an individual can manipulate with this collective perception and use it to his advantage. An important part of the everyday life of the community are rituals, and I therefor devoted one chapter to certain rituals (visits, dancing, conversations, marriage), which Austen uses to describe, and sometimes ridicule, rules governing the community. Finally, I summarize why the community is a character in its own right. I describe the different roles communities play in Austen's novels how these different roles lead to the same result, which is the marriage of the main characters.
