The use of essential oils and their components as a protective measure against bacteria of the genus Pectobacterium during the storage and pickling of potato tubers

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá způsoby využití vybraných silic Mentha x piperita, Origanum vulgare, Thymus vulgaris, Carum carvi, Cinnamomum verum a jejich komponent, jako ochrany hlíz lilku bramboru (Solanum tuberosum L.), proti bakteriím Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc) a Pectobacterium atrosepticum (Pa), způsobujících bakteriální černání stonku a měkkou hnilobu hlíz bramboru. Ochrana je zaměřena na hlízy v posklizňovém, skladovacím a předvýsadbovém období. Testován byl také vliv koncentrace účinné látky a různé metody aplikace. Silice byly testovány in vivo na hlízách a discích brambor. Z výsledků na discích, byla zjištěna nejlepší účinnost máty u obou bakterií. Dobré výsledky měly i silice kmínu (Pcc), dobromyslu (Pcc) a tymiánu (Pa), z komponent to byly carvon a thymoly (Pa) a menthon (Pcc). Naopak nejhorší výsledek vyšel u thymolu syntetického (Pcc) a skořice (Pa). U všech variant silic a jejich komponent, testovaných na celých hlízách, byly výrazně potlačeny škody způsobené přítomností bakterií, jako nejlepší varianty byly vyhodnoceny máta (Pa) a skořice (Pcc) při oplachu a menthon (Pa) a máta (Pcc) při máčení.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with ways of using selected essential oils of Mentha x piperita, Origanum vulgare, Thymus vulgaris, Carum carvi, Cinnamomum verum and their components, as protection of potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum L.), against the bacteria Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc) and Pectobacterium atrosepticum (Pa), causing bacterial black leg and soft rot of potato. Protection is focused on tubers in the post-harvest, storage and pre-planting period. The influence of the concentration of the active substance and different methods of application were also tested. The essential oils were tested in vivo, on potato tubers and discs. From the results on the discs, mint was found to be the best effective for both bacteria. The essential oils of caraway (Pcc), oregano (Pcc) and thyme (Pa), and the components carvone and thymol (Pa) and menthone (Pcc), also had good results. On the contrary, the worst result was obtained with synthetic thymol (Pcc) and cinnamon (Pa). In all variants of essential oils and their components, tested on whole tubers, the damage caused by the presence of bacteria was significantly suppressed, as the best variants were evaluated mint (Pa) and cinnamon (Pcc) when rinsing, and menthone (Pa) and mint (Pcc) when soaking.
