Speciation of mercury in selected environmental compartments

Abstract:

Kontaminace prostředí rtutí je závažný problém současnosti. Důsledkem dálkového přenosu se jedná o globální polutant a sloučeniny rtuti se vyskytují ve všech složkách životního prostředí. Toxicita rtuti je silně závislá na konkrétní chemické formě. Zhodnocení souvisejících rizik v první řadě vyžaduje robustní metody stanovení jejích forem. Pouze s využitím kvalitních nástrojů speciační analýzy může být prohloubeno pochopení jejího globálního cyklu. Tato práce se zabývá speciační analýzou rtuti ve vybraných složkách životního prostředí, mezi které patří polétavý a usazený městský prach, antarktické půdy, sedimenty a lišejníky. Celkové obsahy rtuti byly stanoveny termooxidační metodou AAS s využitím analyzátoru AMA‑254. Základního rozdělení forem rtuti, například pro zhodnocení míry toxicity, lze dosáhnout selektivní extrakcí. Výluh simulující orální biodostupnost rtuti za fyziologických podmínek byl proveden na městském prachu, sbíraném v různých ročních obdobích v centru Brna. Hladiny dostupné rtuti byly nízké, přestože celkové obsahy rtuti se výrazně nelišily od hodnot publikovaných pro velké světové aglomerace. Rozlišení více forem rtuti umožňují sekvenční extrakce. Postupným loužením polétavých prachů i geologických materiálů v pěti extrakčních činidlech byla obsažená rtuť rozdělena do šesti frakcí. Dalšího rozdělení se podařilo dosáhnout kombinací extrakce s termickou desorpcí z pevné fáze. Vyplynulo, že variabilita sloučenin rtuti v polétavém prachu je vysoká, jelikož detekovatelné množství rtuti bylo nalezeno ve všech frakcích. Kombinací sekvenční extrakce s postupnou desorpcí bylo hodnoceno složení a stabilita rtuti v geologických vzorcích z Antarktidy. Značný podíl rtuti obsažené v regolitu vykazoval termickou stabilitu při 250 °C. Srovnání s výsledky sekvenční extrakce naznačuje, že tuto část netvořil pouze sulfid rtuťnatý, ale i další oxidované sloučeniny rtuti. Jelikož retence rtuti v antarktickém svrchním pokryvu je nízká, pro sledování atmosférického přenosu jsou vhodnější lišejníky, které akumulují rtuť z prostředí. Nasbírané vzorky lišejníků Usnea antarctica obsahovaly až 2,7 mg Hg.kg‑1. V jejich stélkách byl určen podíl elementární rtuti a methylrtuti. Pro stanovení methylrtuti byla modifikována metodika využívající GC‑AFS. Zkoumána byla také distribuce rtuti ve stélce a míra korelace jejího obsahu s obsahy ostatních těžkých kovů. Použité metody jsou aplikovatelné i pro další materiály s podobnou matricí. Získaná data rozšiřují znalosti o výskytu a speciaci rtuti v životním prostředí. Výsledky jsou v práci bohatě diskutovány se zohledněním charakteru konkrétních materiálů.

Abstract:

Environmental contamination with mercury is a serious problem of today. Mercury compounds occur in all environmental compartments due to long‑range transport of mercury through the atmosphere. The toxicity of mercury is strongly dependent on the particular chemical form of the element. Assessing the associated risks requires robust techniques for the determination of individual mercury forms. The understanding of mercury global cycle can be deepened by using proper tools of speciation analysis. This thesis deals with speciation analysis of mercury in environmental components, including particulate matter, street dust, Antarctic soils, sediments and lichens. Basic division of mercury forms may be achieved via selective extraction. The simple bioavailability extraction test was conducted on street dust to investigate bioavailability of contained mercury. The proportion of available mercury was low, although the total mercury contents were comparable to those reported for large world's agglomerations. Sequential extractions allow to divide contained mercury into several fractions. Six fractions were separated by sequential leaching of the samples of particulate matter and geological materials in five extractants. Further fractionation was achieved by combining extraction with thermal desorption. It emerged that the mercury in particulate matter was distributed in a wide spectrum of forms, since the mercury was detected in all fractions. By combining sequential extractions with gradual thermal desorption the composition and stability of mercury in geological samples from Antarctica was assessed. A substantial proportion of mercury in the samples was thermally stable at 250 °C. The results of both analysis approaches suggest that the thermally stable part of mercury was not comprised only of mercury sulphide but also contained other divalent mercury forms. Because of the low retention capacity, the extent of atmospheric mercury deposition cannot be evaluated on the basis of the analysis of Antarctic soils. Lichens are preferable for the monitoring of atmospheric deposition due to their accumulative potential. Collected samples of lichen Usnea antarctica contained up to 2.7 mg Hg kg‑1. Also the contents of methylmercury and elemental mercury were determined in their thalli. The distribution of mercury in the lichen thalli and the degree of correlation with other heavy metals was also investigated. The developed methods are applicable to other materials with a similar matrices. The obtained results extend the knowledge of mercury occurrence and speciation in the environment. The findings are widely discussed, taking into account the specific character of the materials.
