Comparison of Oxford and Cambridge Universities with a selected group of British universities

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on two different types of British universities, Oxbridge and Redbricks in particular. The aim of this thesis is to find similarities and differences between them. This particular problem is solved by gathering relevant information and by the final comparison. Providing the background for the comparison, the theoretical part focuses on the following areas, the same for both university types: history, structure and governance, students, famous alumni and rankings. The final comparison proves the fact that these two university types are rather different than similar. The Redbrick Universities have larger student communities, Oxbridge, however, is more prestigious and successful, the main reason being their longer existence.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na dva typy britských univerzit, kontrétně univerzity Oxford a Cambridge (Oxbridge) a tzv. Redbrick Universities. Cílem této práce je najít podobnosti a rozdíly mezi nimi. Zvolený problém je vyřešen pomocí shromáždění relevantních informací k vybraným typům britských univerzit a následným porovnáním. Pět vybraných oblastí: historie, struktura a administrativa, studenti, významní absolventi a umístění v žebříčcích popularity je společných pro oba typy univerzit a pro jejich srovnání. Provedeným srovnáním bylo zjištěno, že mezi těmito typy univerzit je více rozdílů než podobností. Tzv. Redbrick Universities mají sice větší počty studentů, zato Oxford a Cambridge mají mnohem větší prestiž a úspěšnost. Hlavním důvodem může být delší existence Oxfordu a Cambridge.
