Evaluating and Enhancing User Experience in an existing UI Component Library

Abstract:

This thesis evaluates the usability and user experience (UX) of Bühler’s internal Angular-based user interface (UI) component library, focusing on how its current information architecture (IA), including structure, navigation, and labelling, affects these factors. It is primarily aimed at internal roles such as software developers, UX designers, product owners, and architects. To evaluate this, a mixed-method approach was used. Quantitative data was collected through tree testing supported by metrics such as success and directness rates, first-click success, task completion rates, and Single Ease Question (SEQ) scores. These results were supported by comments from participants and feedback collected after the sessions. The findings revealed several issues, such as unclear terminology, an inconsistent structure, and a hybrid categorisation of atomic and functional groupings. These challenges negatively impacted findability and usability, especially for less experienced participants. Based on the evaluation, this thesis presents a structured improvement plan. It suggests reorganising the navigation, simplifying labels, and providing more role-based guidance. These steps are meant to make the system easier to understand and use while also bringing it closer to current Angular best practices. Finally, this work contributes to the ongoing discussion on internal UI and UX optimization within design systems and suggests a path toward more intuitive, scalable component libraries.
