Orchestrating Container-Native Emulators of Human Network Activity

Abstract:

Kyberbezpečnostní cvičení jsou v dnešní době velmi používaným nástrojem k získání znalostí a zkušeností v boji proti kyberútokům. V těchto cvičeních se hráči učí jak odhalovat kyberútoky a jak se jim bránit. Často však ve cvičeních chybí běžný síťový provoz, který v realitě dokáže například zamaskovat probíhající útok. Tato práce zkouší propojit technologii emulace uživatele s technologiemi pro orchestraci kontejnerizovaných aplikací a přidat tak do prostředí cvičení běžné uživatele. Přidáním těchto emulovaných uživatelů se zvýší věrohodnost cvičení, které zároveň bude představovat pro účastníky větší výzvu. Zároveň, použití kontejnerů zajistí nižší hardwarové nároky a usnadní přípravu cvičení. Výstupem práce je několik příkladů, které popisují různé způsoby nasazení uživatelů do kyberbezpečnostního cvičení.

Abstract:

Nowadays, cybersecurity exercises are a widely used tool to gain knowledge and experience in the fight against cyber attacks. Players learn how to detect and defend against cyber attacks in these exercises. However, the exercises often lack the regular network traffic that, in reality, can mask an ongoing attack. This work combines user emulation technology with containerised application orchestration technologies to add ordinary users to the exercise environment. Adding these emulated users will increase the plausibility of the exercise, which will also pose a greater challenge to the participants. Furthermore, using containers will ensure lower hardware requirements and facilitate the preparation of the exercise. The output of this thesis is several examples that describe different ways of deploying users in a cybersecurity exercise.
