The impact of conflicting information in online reviews on consumer decision making process

Abstract:

Důležitost online recenzí pro rozhodování spotřebitele roste, avšak informace v nich obsažené mohou být konfliktní. Jelikož je však oblast konfliktních informací málo prozkoumaným fenoménem, má tato práce za cíl zjistit, jak konfliktní informace v online recenzích ovlivňují rozhodování spotřebitele. Teoretická část předkládá shrnutí dosavadních poznatků především z oboru letectví a zdravotnictví, na které následně navazují tři výzkumné hypotézy, které práce ověřuje ve spotřebitelském prostředí. Výzkumné hypotézy se zaměřovaly konkrétněji na vliv konfliktních informací na úmysl jedince daný produkt koupit, vnímanou důvěryhodnost dané online recenze a na ověření, zda rozhodovací styl jedince také ovlivňuje jeho reakci. Výzkum byl prováděn pomocí experimentu mezi 236 respondenty, především ve věku 19–29 let žijícími na území České a Slovenské republiky. Vlastní výzkum zjistil, že konfliktní informace snižují úmysl jedince daný produkt koupit. Vliv konfliktních informací na vnímanou důvěryhodnost dané recenze byl zamítnut, stejně jako byl zamítnut statisticky významný rozdíl mezi respondenty s intuitivním a racionálním rozhodovacím stylem.

Abstract:

The importance of online reviews for consumer decision-making is increasing, but the information contained in them can be conflicting. However, since the area of conflicting information is a little-researched phenomenon, this work aims to find out how conflicting information in online reviews affects consumer decision-making process. The theoretical part presents a summary of current knowledge, mainly from the field of aviation and healthcare, which is then followed by three research hypotheses that the work verifies in the consumer environment. The research hypotheses focused more specifically on the influence of conflicting information on an individual's intention to purchase a given product, the perceived credibility of a given online review, and on verifying whether an individual's decision-making style also influences their reaction. The research was carried out using an experiment among 236 respondents, mainly aged 19–29 living in the territory of the Czech and Slovak Republics. Our own research found that conflicting information reduces an individual's intention to buy a given product. The influence of conflicting information on the perceived credibility of the given review was rejected, just as a statistically significant difference between respondents with an intuitive and rational decision-making style was also rejected.
