The role of agriculture in ensuring food security in Ghana

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá, jakou roli hraje zemědělství při zajišťování potravinové jistoty v Ghaně. Práce představuje základní koncepty potravinové jistoty a analyzuje její situaci ve světě. V práci je jsou použita roční data časové řady z rozmezí let 1987 a 2017. Metoda OLS (Metoda nejmenších čtverců) je zde použita pro odhad jednoduchého modelu regrese časových řad. Jako závislá proměnná je zde použita celková rostlinná produkce a celková populace Ghany. Nezávislá proměnná je pak čas (t). Sekundární data byla získána ze statistik Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) a ze statistic Světové banky. Analýza v práci ukázala, že růst celkové rostlinné produkce přesahuje růst počtu obyvatelstva v Ghaně a je zde tedy žádné nebo jen velmi male riziko omezení potravinové dostupnosti, která je nezbytným elementem pro potravinovou jistotu v zemi. Zároveň práce take potvrzuje efektivitu zemědělských politik a program Ghanské vlády, které zajišťují potravinovou jistotu jako celek.

Abstract:

This research study examines the role that agriculture plays in ensuring food security in Ghana; explain the basic concepts of food security and analyse some situation of food security in the world. The study uses an annual time series data from 1987 to 2017 and Ordinary Least Squared Method (OLS) to estimate the simple time series regression model. The dependent variables for the study are Total Crop Production (TCP) and Total Population (POP); while the independent variable is the time trend (t). The secondary data for the study is obtained from the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) statistics and the World Bank’s data on Ghana’s Population. The findings in the research shows that the growth rate for the total crop production outpaces that of the Ghanaian population, and there is little or no potential threat to food availability which is an essential element of food availability in the country. In addition, the study confirms the effectiveness of the Ghanaian government's agricultural policies and programs in ensuring food security in Ghana as a whole.
