Impacts of the transformation of energy infrastructure and energy resources on the world economy

Abstract:

Energy transformation represents one of the EU's top topics and priorities after two stressful tests: the coronavirus pandemic and the military conflict in Ukraine. These challenges started the turbulence in the energy commodity market and at the same time pointed to the fragility of European energy security and energy policy, which was transformed for decades but did not effectively address its own self-sufficiency and security in the long term. The presented work thus responds in three parts to the global energy challenges and specificities caused by the uneven distribution of raw material resources in the world and the paradox that the largest deposits rich in fossil fuels are located in the equatorial region in states that have shown political and economic instability for centuries and are largely built on the authoritarian principle of governance. The second part of the work is devoted to the European energy policy and strategic documents and concepts, the goal of which is the transformation and reduction of carbon emissions on a long-term scale. The effects of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine on the energy infrastructure are closely related to it, which of course are also transferred to the Slovak energy policy. It was this that we tried to capture in the last part of the work and to point out the significant investment debt in the energy infrastructure, but also the potential for change that is offered in the next decade of the Slovak Republic. The aim of the thesis is a reflexive analysis of the energy transformation of the global economy with a focus on specific challenges at the level of the European energy and green transformation, which has an impact on the national economy. The ambition of the work is to point out the potential of regions as bearers of energy innovation and transformation through an analytical, comparative and synthetic method combined with critical analysis.

Abstract:

Energetická transformácia reprezentuje jednu z top tém a priorít EÚ po dvoch zaťažkávacích skúškach: pandémií koronavírusu a vojenského konfliktu na Ukrajine. Tieto výzvy odštartovali turbulencie na trhu s energetickými komoditami a zároveň poukázali na krehkosť európskej energetickej bezpečnosti a energetickej politiky, ktorá sa po dekády transformovala ale dlhodobo efektívne neriešila vlastnú sebestačnosť a bezpečnosť. Predkladaná práca tak reaguje v troch častiach na globálne energetické výzvy a špecifiká, ktoré spôsobuje nerovnomerné rozloženie surovinových zdrojov na svete a paradox, že najväčšie ložiská bohaté na fosílne palivá sa nachádzajú v rovníkovej oblasti v štátoch, ktoré po stáročia vykazujú politickú a ekonomickú nestabilitu a sú prevažne postavené na autoritárskom princípe vládnutia. Druhá časť práce sa venuje európskej energetickej politike a strategickým dokumentom a koncepciám, ktorých cieľom je transformácia a znižovanie emisií uhlíka v dlhodobom meradle. S ňou sú úzko previazané dopady pandémie a vojny na Ukrajine na energetickú infraštruktúru, ktoré sa samozrejme prenášajú aj do Slovenskej energetickej politiky. Práve tú sme sa snažili zachytiť v poslednej časti práce a poukázať síce na výrazný investičný dlh v energetickej infraštruktúre ale aj na potenciál zmeny, ktorý sa v najbližšej dekáde SR ponúka. Cieľom diplomovej práce je reflexívna analýza energetickej transformácie globálnej ekonomiky so zameraním na špecifické výzvy na úrovni európskej energetickej a zelenej transformácie, ktorá má dopady na národnú ekonomiku. Ambíciou práce je prostredníctvom analytickej, komparatívnej a syntetickej metódy spojenej s kritickou analýzou poukázať na potenciál regiónov ako nositeľov energetickej inovácie a transformácie.
