Perception of desirable and undesirable personality traits of an English lecturer

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá charakteristikami, které studenti i učitelé vnímají jako zásadní pro výuku anglického jazyka. Cílem studie je identifikovat osobnostní vlastnosti, které přispívají k efektivitě učitelů angličtiny, konkrétně se zaměřuje na to, jak tyto vlastnosti vnímají studenti a učitelé. K dosažení tohoto cíle práce využívá jak teoretický, tak empirický přístup. Teoretická část definuje klíčové pojmy související s osobností a nastiňuje žádoucí a nežádoucí vlastnosti v rámci výuky. Zabývá se také různými metodami posuzování osobnosti, včetně psychometrických nástrojů, jako je model Velké pětky osobnostních vlastností, projektivních testů a psychoanalytických přístupů. Empirická část práce zahrnuje dvoudílnou metodiku průzkumu zaměřenou na studenty i učitele. Sběr dat probíhal prostřednictvím online dotazníků distribuovaných přes sociální sítě. Cílem dotazníku pro studenty bylo zjistit jejich zkušenosti a preference týkající se osobnostních vlastností jejich učitelů angličtiny, zatímco dotazník pro učitele se zaměřil na sebepojetí a vlastnosti, které považují za důležité pro výuku. Výsledky výzkumu odhalily výraznou shodu mezi preferencemi studentů a učitelů. Vlastnosti jako otevřenost změnám, vstřícnost a strukturovaný přístup k výuce byly oběma skupinami vysoce ceněny. Naopak negativně byly vnímány vlastnosti spojené s dezorganizací nebo nepředvídatelností. Studie také zjistila, že ačkoli se studenti a učitelé obecně shodují na důležitosti některých osobnostních rysů, existují rozdíly v jejich vnímání, zejména pokud jde o roli spontánnosti a přísnosti ve třídě. Práce v závěru potvrzuje význam osobnostních vlastností pro efektivní výuku a naznačuje potenciální přínosy začlenění psychologického testování do procesu přijímání učitelů. To by mohlo zajistit, že kandidáti budou mít osobnostní charakteristiky nezbytné pro podporu pozitivního vzdělávacího prostředí, a to i v případě, že nemají formální pedagogické vzdělání.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the characteristics that students and teachers perceive as essential for English language learning. The aim of the study is to identify the personal traits that contribute to the effectiveness of English teachers, specifically focusing on how students and teachers perceive these traits. To achieve this goal, the thesis uses both theoretical and empirical approaches. The theoretical section defines key concepts related to personality and outlines desirable and undesirable personality traits in the context of teaching. It also explores various methods of assessing personality, including psychometric tools such as the Big Five model of personality traits, projective tests and psychoanalytic approaches. The empirical section of the thesis includes a two-part survey methodology aimed at students and teachers. Data collection was conducted through online questionnaires distributed through social networks. The questionnaire for students aimed to find out their experiences and preferences regarding the personality traits of their English teachers, while the questionnaire for teachers focused on self-perception and the qualities they consider important for teaching. The results of the research revealed a significant overlap between students' and teachers' preferences. Qualities such as openness to change, approachability and a structured approach to teaching were highly valued by both groups. In contrast, qualities associated with disorganization or unpredictability were perceived negatively. The study also found that although students and teachers generally agreed on the importance of certain personality traits, there are differences in their perceptions, particularly regarding the role of spontaneity and strictness in the classroom. The thesis concludes by acknowledging the importance of personality traits for effective teaching and suggests the potential benefits of incorporating psychological testing into the teacher recruitment process. This could ensure that candidates possess the personality characteristics necessary to foster a positive learning environment, even if they do not have formal teacher education.
