The prevalence of distortions in known management theories

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit rozšířenost zkreslení známých manažerských teorií v učebnicích managementu vybraných ze dvou českých vysokých škol – VŠE a ZČU. K analyzování bylo vybráno celkem 17 knih. V práci je nejprve provedena rešerše vybraných teorií – Hawthornského experimentu, Maslowovy pyramidy potřeb, osobnostního testu MBTI, Mehrabianovy teorie, Teorie X a Y a zjištěny zkreslení a chyby týkající se těchto teorií. Následně jsou v práci vysvětlení těchto teorií ve vybraných knihách ohodnocena. Zhruba polovina těchto vysvětlení obsahovala nějakou chybu. Nepodařilo se najít evidenci, že by byl statisticky signifikantní rozdíl v kvalitě knih od českých a zahraničních autorů, knih z VŠE a ze ZČU, ani v kvalitě knih vyskytujících se v několika předmětech a pouze v jednom předmětu na vybraných fakultách těchto škol. Výsledky této práce poukazují na to, že ani na učebnice se nelze vždy spolehnout a je třeba k informacím v nich prezentovaných přistupovat s kritickým pohledem.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to determine the prevalence of distortions of known management theories in management textbooks selected from two Czech universities – VŠE and ZČU. 17 books in total were selected for analysis. In this paper, firstly, a search of the selected theories – Hawthorne experiment, Maslow's pyramid of needs, MBTI personality test, Mehrabian theory, Theory X and Y is conducted and distortions and errors related to these theories are identified. Subsequently, the explanations of these theories in the selected books are evaluated in the paper. About half of these explanations contained some error. No evidence could be found that there was a statistically significant difference in the quality of books by Czech and foreign authors, books from VŠE and ZČU, or in the quality of books appearing in several subjects and only one subject in the selected faculties of these universities. The results of this work indicate that even textbooks cannot always be relied upon and that the information presented in them should be approached with a critical eye.
