Contrastive analysis of communication strategies in English/Czech discourse: popular scientific texts on health-related topics

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the communication strategies in Czech and English popular scientific texts on health-related topics from the contrastive point of view. The thesis is divided into five parts. The first part provides the introduction to this thesis. The second part characterizes the material analysed in part four. The third part describes the theoretical framework used in the analytical part that includes the concept of communication strategies, Halliday's concept of metafunctions, Fairclough's approach to critical discourse analysis, speech act theory, and politeness principle. Part four then focuses on the analysis of communication strategies within the corpus, namely the interpersonal strategies, strategies related to representing the problem and the solution, strategies related to presentation of scientific information to a non-professional, and supporting strategies including the use of hypertextual links. The last part provides the conclusion to this thesis.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je konstrastivní analýza komunikačních strategií v českých a anglických populárně vědeckých textech o zdraví. Práce je rozdělena do pěti částí. První část slouží jako úvod k této práci. Druhá část charakterizuje materiál, který je analyzován ve čtvrté části. Třetí část popisuje teoretický rámec, který byl využit v analytické části a který zahrnuje koncept komunikačních strategií, Hallidayův koncept metafunkcí, Faircloughovo pojetí kritické diskurzivní analýzy, teorii řečových aktů, a zdvořilostní princip. Čtvrtá část se pak zaměřuje na samotnou analýzu komunikačních strategií v korpusu, konkrétně na interpersonální strategie, strategie spojené s reprezentací problému a řešení, strategie spojené s prezentací odborných informací neodborníkům, a podpůrné strategie zahrnující využití hypertextových odkazů. Poslední částí této práce je závěr.
