One story, two genres; the narratives of Miranda and Caliban in John Fowles's The Collector

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá dílem anglického spisovatele Johna Fowlese a věnuje se porovnání dvou odlišných literárních stylů – detektivního žánru a společenského románu, které použil ve své knize Sběratel. Cílem práce je rozebrat a porovnat vyprávění dvou postav knihy. Vyprávění jsou analyzována z hlediska obsahové stránky a jazykových prostředků. Přestože se obě vyprávění týkají stejné události, liší se v mnohém. V první a třetí části knihy vypráví Frederick Clegg, kterému jeho knižní protějšek Miranda říká Kaliban. Clegg je mladý muž, který vykazuje psychopatické rysy. Při vyprávění příběhu ho autor nechává mluvit jazykem brakové literatury. Druhou část knihy vypráví oběť, mladá dívka Miranda, která líčí stejný příběh. Tentokrát autor používá styl společenského románu. Práce si všímá mísení literárních žánrů ve Fowlesových dílech všeobecně a soustředí se na příklady výskytu dvou odlišných žánrů v knize Sběratel. Tyto příklady neukazují jen na odlišné vnímání reality, ale především odlišnosti v obsahu a jazyce obou vyprávění.

Abstract:

Drawing on the work of English writer John Fowles this thesis compares two literary styles - detective and social novel that occurs in his book The Collector. The main aim of this work consists in analysing and comparing two narratives of protagonists of the book. The narratives are analysed with the respect to their content and language. Although both narratives deal with the same event, they differ a lot. The first and third part is told by the perpetrator Frederick Clegg, also called Caliban by his counterpart Miranda. He is a young man who shows features of psychopathy. The author lets him describe the story using the literary style of pulp fiction. Second part is told by the victim, a young girl Miranda who tells the same story; this time the author uses the style of a social novel. This thesis deals with mixing genres in Fowles's work generally and concentrates on examples of two different genres that occur in the book The Collector. These examples show not only different views of reality but above all different contents and language of both narratives.
