Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analýza novely Carol Shieldsové, autobiografie, která byla napsána z pohledu hlavní hrdinky Daisy Goodwill Flettové. Shieldsová aplikuje čtyři typy vyprávění, všechny vznikající z Daisina vyprávění svého životního příběhu. Daisy ve své autobiografii nejdříve užívá vyprávění v první osobě, ve třetí osobě klade kritické otázky zpochybňující pravdivost životního příběhu, ve třetí osobě co by vševědoucí vypravěčka odkrývá své názory na vedlejší charaktery, a nakonec v první osobě promlouvá ke čtenářům během svého porodu a po své smrti. Tato práce rozebírá použití vypravěčských postupů, které dovoluji čtenáři získat hlubší porozumění hlavní hrdince, Daisy Goodwill Flettové a problémům spojených s psaním autobiografie . První část práce se zaměřuje na žánr autobiografie a způsob, jaký byl uživán v minulosti. Nicméně, Shieldsová se distancuje od konvenčních přístupů k autobiografii a kritice autentičnosti a životní pravdy v knize Deníky z kamene (The Stone Diaries), které lze interpretovat jako meta - autobiografii. Práce Shieldsové je rovněž ovlivněná feministickým hnutím, které zkoumá vlastnosti autobiografie žen a rozdíly, které odlišují psaní žen od mužů. Následující část práce se zabývá analýzou, která probíhá chronologicky, po kapitolách, od "narození" do "smrti" stejně jak je popsána v Deníky z kamene (The Stone Diaries), přičemž Daisina životní cesta a vyprávěčský styl Shieldsové je vysvětlována. Posouvání úhlu pohledu a vypravěčských metod umožňují čtenáři intimní porozumění Daisy a dalším postavám v novele. Závěrečná část analýzy zdůrazňuje Daisinu přítomnost anebo nepřítomnost v rámci celého textu. I když Daisy nenajde sebe samu nebo svůj hlas ve svém životním příběhu, její hlas stále zní pro čtenáře její autobiografie.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze Carol Shields’s novel The Stone Diaries as an autobiography written through the eyes of the protagonist, Daisy Goodwill Flett. Shields applies four types of narrators all originating from Daisy to tell her life story. Daisy acts as a first-person narrator writing her autobiography, a third-person critical narrator questioning the truth of the life story, a third-person omniscient narrator disclosing the opinions of a selection of secondary characters, and, finally, as a first-person narrator that speaks to the reader during Daisy’s birth and after her death. This thesis elaborates on the use of narrative techniques that allow the readers to gain a deeper understanding of the protagonist Daisy Goodwill Flett and the problems associated with writing an autobiography. In the first part of the thesis, the focus is on the genre of autobiography and the way it has been used in the past. However, Shields distances herself from the conventional approaches of autobiography and critiques authenticity and truth in life writing so that The Stone Diaries can be interpreted as a meta-autobiography. Shields’s work is also influenced by the feminist movement where the characteristics of women’s autobiography and the differences that distinguish women’s writing from men’s are explored. The following part is concerned with the analysis of The Stone Diaries chronologically, following the chapters from “Birth” to “Death”, while establishing Daisy’s life journey and the narrative styles Shields employs throughout Daisy’s quest of self-discovery. The shifting points-of-view and narrative strategies enable the reader to achieve an intimate understanding of Daisy and the other characters in the novel. The final part of the analysis stresses Daisy’s presence or absence within the text. Even though Daisy does not find herself or her voice through her life journey, her voice remains heard by the readers of her autobiography.
