What influences bullying at grammar school

Abstract:

Bullying is by all means a common phenomenon in schools around the world and has an implication on the emotional and academic success of students. The present research focuses on the bullying behavior of young students (between ages 4 and 14) in Moscow, and I use PISA data to different factors that correlate with it. Specifically, I study how bullying behavior relates to parental support, age, gender, social status, teacher interest, and sense of belonging. In line with previous research, I find a gen-der disparity in bullying, where more often boys than girls experienced bullying. Besides, this incidence was found to relate highly to the home resources and socioeconomic status of students. Teacher and student interests were also considered as a few of the factors to add to the list of activities of bullying behavior. Students with less engagement tended to lash out at their peers and thus highlight the school administrators’ efforts in motivating students to do well in the classroom. Furthermore, teacher interest revealed no significant relation with bullying.
