Peter Auriol and William Ockham on Sense Perception

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této práce je smyslové vnímání podle dvou středověkých františkánských myslitelů - Petra Auriola (asi 1280 - 1322) a Viléma Ockhama (asi 1287 - 1347). V první kapitole představuji možné přístupy k otázce smyslového vnímání, které byly běžné na počátku 14. století - aristotelský výklad, výklad tzv. perspektivistů (tedy představitelů arabské a latinské tradice středověké optiky) a změny, se kterými přišel Duns Scotus. Ve druhé kapitole představuji, jaký Auriol a Ockham zvolili přístup vůči koncepci intuitivního poznání zavedené Dunsem Scotem, a důsledky, které to má pro jejich výklad smyslového vnímání. Třetí kapitola shromažďuje pramenný materiál k termínu esse apparens, který je důležitou součástí Auriolova pojetí vnímání. Také poukazuje na jeden z možných zdrojů Auriolových noetických úvah, který dosud zůstával nepovšimnutý - dobový katoptrický traktát s názvem De speculis. Čtvrtá kapitola zkoumá přístup obou myslitelů ke konceptu species (který slouží jako základní prvek aristotelského výkladu smyslového vnímání). Oproti obecnému mínění současných badatelů se domnívám, že koncept species hraje v Auriolově výkladu vnímání důležitou roli. Ockham naopak koncept species odmítá, ačkoliv se podle mého názoru nevzdaluje od kořenů aristotelské tradice tak daleko, jak by se mohlo na první pohled zdát. Pátá kapitola je věnována smyslovým klamům a roli, kterou hrají v teorii percepce u obou myslitelů. Konečně v kapitole šesté představuji systematické shrnutí Auriolovy teorie percepce a zhodnocení současné literatury k tomuto tématu. V této kapitole se pokouším vyvrátit to, co je podle mého názoru společné většině současných interpretací Auriola - implicitní předpoklad, že Auriol používá argument z iluze.

Abstract:

The main topic of this thesis is sense perception according to two medieval Franciscan thinkers - namely Peter Auriol (c. 1280 - 1322) and William Ockham (c. 1287 - 1347). In Chapter 1 I introduce possible attitudes to the question of sense perception which were common in the beginning of the 14th century - an Aristotelian account, an account held by so called perspectivists (i.e. exponents of the Arabian and Latin tradition of optics), and changes which Duns Scotus came out with. In Chapter 2 I expose how Ockham and Auriol defined their positions concerning the conception of intuitive cognition established by Duns Scotus, and consequences of these positions on their accounts of sense perception. Chapter 3 gathers textual evidence concerning the term esse apparens which is an important part of Auriol?s notion of sense perception. Also, it points out one hitherto unnoticed possible source of Auriol?s noetic considerations - a contemporary catoptrical treatise named De speculis. Chapter 4 scrutinizes the attitudes to the species (which concept serves as a basic element of the Aristotelian account of sense perception) of both thinkers. Against the common opinion of present-day scholars, I assume that species concept plays an important role in Auriol?s account of perception. On the contrary, Ockham refuses species concept, although in my opinion he does not digress from the roots of Aristotelian tradition as much as it would seem at first sight. Chapter 5 is devoted to sense illusions and the roles which they play in the theories of perception of both thinkers. Finally, in Chapter 6 I propose a systematic summary of Auriol?s theory of perception and an assessment of present-day literature about this topic. In this chapter, I try to disprove what is in my opinion common to the most of the present-day interpretations of Auriol - implicit assumption that Auriol uses an argument from illusion.
