Destigmatizing Black Women in American Cinema: Hollywood vs Independent Black Women Filmmakers

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the differences in the portrayal of black female characters in Hollywood movies and in movies produced by black women filmmakers. Stereotypical portrayal of black women in Hollywood movies is still used as decades before. The main goal of this thesis is to analyse chosen films made by black female filmmakers that demonstrate the possibility of showcasing black women multi-dimensionally and individually. The theoretical part deals with various stereotypes used in cinematic history. Stereotypes, such as the Mammy, Sapphire, Jezebel, Magical Negro, and so on, are later described in peculiar detail. The stereotypical characteristics of how black women behave are used in Hollywood movies, and chosen films are further listed and analysed. The practical part analyses work by two black female filmmakers - Kasi Lemmons and Gina Prince-Bythewood. I have analysed two of each creator's movies. These analyses show the different approach in portrayal of a character by an African American filmmaker and demonstrate individual uniqueness and importance of non-labelling by either appearance or skin colour.

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na rozdíly mezi vyobrazením ženských černošských postav v Hollywoodských filmech a filmech produkovanými nezávislými černošskými filmařkami. Stejně jako mnoho desetiletí před tímto, černošské ženy jsou stále vyobrazovány za použití stereotypů. Hlavním cílem této práce je analýza vybraných filmů černošských filmařek, které poukazují na možnost mnohovrstevnatého vyobrazení černošských žen a jejich individualit. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na množství stereotypů používaných v průběhu historie kinematografie. Stereotypy jako Mammy, Sapphire, Jezebel, Magical Negro jsou později detailně popsány a vysvětleny na postavách v daných filmech. Praktická část analyzuje tvorbu dvou černošských filmařek - Kasi Lemmonsové a Gina Prince-Bythewoodové. Práce analyzuje dva filmy z tvorby daných filmařek. Tyto analýzy ukazují na unikátní postoj filmařek k vyobrazení černošských žen a demonstrují důležitost individuality a "neškatulkování" zapříčiněné vzhledem a barvou kůže.
