The impact of technological systems on calf welfare

Abstract:

V literární části bakalářské práce je věnována pozornost technologickým systémům ustájení a krmení využívaných v odchovu telat v systému chovu skotu s tržní produkcí mléka. Je popsána problematika welfare a chování telat s důrazem na vzájemnou vazbu mezi teletem a matkou. V praktické části je vyhodnocován vliv doby odebrání telete od matky na chování telat a jejich dechovou a tepovou frekvenci od okamžiku odebrání po dobu dvou hodin. Testovacími subjekty bylo 16 telat rozdělených do dvou skupin právě podle doby oddělení od matky po narození. Byla sestavena stupnice reakce na oddělení a byl podle ní obodován každý proces odebrání jednotlivých telat od matek. Odebírání po 18 až 36 hodinách vykazovalo vyšší procento problémových reakcí, než odebírání po 2 hodinách. Z pozorování chování vyplývá, že nejčastější aktivitou u obou skupin telat bylo ležení. Nebyly vypozorovány zásadní rozdíly v chování mezi oběma skupinami telat. Dechová frekvence telat oddělených po 18 až 36 hodinách se pohybovala na vyšších hodnotách počátečních i konečných, a u dvou telat se frekvence dechu do konce měření zvýšila. Hodnoty tepové frekvence byly taktéž vyšší než u skupiny telat oddělených po 2 hodinách, ale snížily se do konce měření u všech telat.

Abstract:

In the literary part of the bachelor thesis, attention is paid to the technological systems of housing and feeding used in calf rearing within a dairy cattle production system. The welfare and behavior issues of calves are described, with a focus on the interrelationship between the calf and the mother cow. In the practical part, the influence of the time of calf separation from the mother on calf behavior, respiratory rate, and heart rate from the moment of separation for up to two hours is evaluated. The test subjects were 16 calves divided into two groups based on the time of separation from the mother after birth. A separation reaction scale was developed and used to score each separation process of individual calves from their mothers. Separation after 18 to 36 hours showed a higher percentage of problematic reactions compared to separation after 2 hours. From the behavior observations, it appears that the most common activity among both groups of calves was lying. No significant differences in behavior were observed between the two groups of calves. The respiratory rate of calves separated after 18 to 36 hours was higher initially and remained elevated at the end of the measurement period, with two calves experiencing an increase in respiratory rate throughout the measurement period. Heart rate values were also higher compared to the group of calves separated after 2 hours but decreased by the end of the measurement period for all calves.
