Rewriting Shakespeare in Contemporary Symbols, Characters and Language

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se soustřeďuje na dva moderní přepisy Shakespearových her: na Days of Significance od Roya Williamsa napsanou v roce 2007 a na Dunsinane od Davida Greiga, prvně odehranou v roce 2010. První hra je velmi volnou reakcí na Mnoho křiku pro nic a ta druhá je pokračováním Macbetha. Cílem této práce je analyzovat obě tyto nové hry s ohledem na jejich originál a zachytit vývoj různých symbolů, postav a jazyka, tak jak se projevují v moderním prostředí. Obě hry využívají nástroje intertextuality na zdůraznění situací v současné době; nejočividněji ve válce v Iráku a Afganistánu a jejích důsledků na životy řádových vojáků, jejich rodiny a v případě Dunsinane stejně také velitelů. Tato práce se snaží pomocí analýzy dokázat, že má-li jakákoliv přepis Shakespeara být v moderní době funkční, musí autor zvážit dva následující elementy. Přímo nebo pomocí paralely překlopit dění ve hře do dnešního prostředí a za druhé, musí se pokusit použít jazyk inovačně.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on two modern rewritings of Shakespeare’s plays: Roy Williams’ Days of Significance written in 2007 and David Greig’s Dunsinane first performed in 2010. The former is a very loose response to Much Ado About Nothing and the latter is a sequel to Macbeth. The aim of this thesis is to analyse both new plays through the prism of the originals and track the development of the different symbols, characters and language and how they play out in a modernised environment. Both plays use the tools of intertextuality to emphasise situations in contemporary life; most overtly the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and its consequences on the lives of ordinary soldiers, their families and in the case of Dunsinane the commanders as well. This thesis seeks to prove through this analysis that for any rewriting of Shakespeare to work in modern era, the playwright needs to consider two basic elements: firstly, directly or through a parallel relocate the happening in the new play to present-day environment and secondly make an attempt at using the language in an innovative way.
