Greta Gerwig’s Movie Adaptation Little Women and Its Relevance to the Current Society

Anotácia:

Tato práce nabízí čtenáři analýzu nejnovější filmové adaptace románu Malé ženy, který napsala Louisa May Alcottová v roce 1868. Práce se zaměřuje na otázku aktuálnosti příběhu pro současné publikum a rozebírá aspekty adaptace, které způsobují moderní vyznění filmu. Práce se také zabývá kulturním kontextem a vývojem postavení ženy ve společnosti. Cílem práce je rozhodnout, zda je téma příběhu relevantní pro současné publikum, a zdůraznit rysy filmu, které příběh modernizují. Důraz bude kladen na hlavní postavy a jejich pohled na genderové stereotypy a feminismus. V poslední části bude zkoumána struktura filmu a to, jak mění význam a hlavní poselství příběhu.

Abstract:

This thesis will offer the reader an analysis of the latest film adaptation Little Women done by Greta Gerwig of the domestic novel Little Women written by Louisa May Alcott in 1868. The thesis will focus on the question of the relevance of the story to the current audience and will discuss the aspects of the adaptation that causes the modernity of the film. The cultural context and the development of the female position in society will be provided. The thesis will aim to decide whether the theme of the story is relevant to the current audience and to underline the features of the film that might modernise the story. The focus will be placed on the main characters and their view on gender stereotypes and feminism. The last part will examine the structure of the movie and how it changes the meaning and the main message of the story.
