Influence of scientific progress on poetry of W. C. Williams and W. Stevens.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá působením prudce se rozvíjejících věd a vědeckého pokroku na poč. 20. století na tvorbu dvou modernistických básníků - Williama Carlose Williamse a Wallace Stevense. Přičemž hlavním výzkumným záměrem bylo analyzovat a interpretovat jejich tvorbu s cílem odhalit specifické rysy jejich básnické tvorby a na jejich základě specifikovat jejich odlišné reakce a přístupy k vědě a pokroku, případně i možné podobnosti. Jelikož však rozsah bakalářské práce umožnil jejímu autorovi pouze zúžený pohled na toto rozsáhlé téma, byl proto proveden pečlivý výběr reprezentativních básní z tvorby obou básníků, na kterých byla analýza, interpretace a následně komparace provedena. Teoretické východisko práce je ze stejného důvodu zúženo na kratší studie mapující ty oblasti vědeckého pokroku, které celkově ovlivnily poezii té doby a způsobily její radikální proměnu po stránce obsahové i formální.

Abstract:

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to explore the influence of an immense scientific progress at the beginning of the 20th century on the poetry of two American modernist poets William Carlos Williams and Wallace Stevens. The main goal is to analyze and interpret their work in order to define specific features of their poetry and use these to specify their different poetic approaches to sciences and scientific progress, alternatively to find similarities. The extent of the thesis limits the author only to have narrowed look into this extensive topic. Therefore only a selection of several carefully selected poems of both poets is analyzed, interpreted and compared. The theory of the thesis is as well limited to shorter studies mapping those areas of scientific progress, which altogether influenced poetry of that time and caused its fundamental change in form and content.
