Press censorship in Portugal during the period of dictatorship (Estado Novo), 1933-1974

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to investigate the forms of censorship in Portugal during the period of dictatorship between 1933 and 1974. The first part of the work is focused on the socio-political situation in the country, while the second part analyses the theoretical part of censorship. In the third and fourth parts, specific manifestations of censorship in Portugal are investigated as well as its organizational structure and its legislative foundations. The final part explores the consequences of censorship in Portuguese society during the years of dictatorship and even after the transition to democracy.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat formy cenzury v Portugalsku v období diktatury mezi léty 1933 a 1974. První část práce je zaměřena na socio-politickou situaci v zemi, zatímco druhá část se zabývá teoretickou analýzou institutu cenzury. Ve třetí a čtvrté části práce se zkoumají konkrétní projevy a způsoby fungování cenzury v Portugalsku, zejména pak ve vztahu k dennímu tisku a literatuře. Dále je zkoumána organizační struktura cenzury a její legislativní základ. Závěrem jsou prozkoumány následky cenzury pro portugalskou společnost během let diktatury a i následně po přechodu na demokracii.
