Ecology of shrews (Mammalia, Soricidae) in selected types of habitats

Abstract:

Disertační práce se věnuje skupině drobných savců z čeledi rejskovití (Soricidae), nejpočetnější a druhově nejrozmanitější čeledi z řádu hmyzožravci (Eulipotyphla). Po celém světě (kromě Antarktidy a Karibských ostrovů) se vyskytuje přes 400 žijících druhů. Díky své malé velikosti a rychlému metabolismu se dokázali přizpůsobit širokému spektru stanovišť a podmínek. Hrají důležitou roli v mnoha ekosystémech, jejich význam se uplatňuje především v potravních sítích. V rámci práce byly studovány vybrané lesní biotopy na území České republiky, které jsou součástí krajiny s různou intenzitou lesnického a zemědělského managementu. Kromě srovnání početnosti a druhové diverzity rejskovitých na těchto stanovištích byla zvlášť hodnocena i populační dynamika nejběžnějšího druhu, rejska obecného (Sorex araneus), doplněná o analýzu vlivu vybraných klimatických faktorů. Práce zjistila významnou roli lesních stanovišť v raném stádiu sukcese s bohatým bylinným patrem pro populace žijící ve vyšších nadmořských výškách, ale také upozorňuje na tato stanoviště jako na důležitá refugia pro populace obývající intenzivně obhospodařovanou zemědělskou krajinu v nížinách. Výsledky dále přispívají k poznatkům o populační dynamice rejska obecného v podmínkách střední Evropy a poukazují na jeho citlivost k některým environmentálním (klimatickým) vlivům, a to nejen na lokální úrovni, ale také ve větším geografickém měřítku.

Abstract:

This dissertation thesis is concerned with a group of small mammals from the family Soricidae, the largest and most diverse family of the order Eulipotyphla. Shrews are distributed throughout the world, except for Antarctica and the Caribbean islands, and comprise over 400 living species. Due to their small size and high metabolism, they have adapted to a wide range of habitats and conditions. They play an important role in many ecosystems, particularly in food webs. The study examined selected forest biotopes in the Czech Republic, which are part of the landscape with varying intensity of forestry and agricultural management. In addition to comparing the abundance and species diversity of shrews in these habitats, the population dynamics of the most common species, the common shrew (Sorex araneus), were separately evaluated. This evaluation was complemented by an analysis of the influence of selected climatic factors. The study found a significant role of forest habitats in the early stage of succession with a rich herb layer for populations living at higher elevations. It also highlights these habitats as important refuges for populations inhabiting intensively managed agricultural landscapes in the lowlands. The results further contribute to understanding of the population dynamics of the common shrew in the Central European conditions and indicate its sensitivity to certain environmental (climatic) factors, not only at the local level but also on a larger geographical scale
